Sam Murphy (Decatur, AL), who wrapped up his golf eligibility at Tech in 2022, is playing at the Royal Lytham and St. Annes Golf Club in the United Kingdom.
After the first round of match play on 06/15, Murphy and Christian Banke (University of Arizona) are the only two Americans to advance to the round of 32 (16 matches) on Thursday.
Prior to the first round of match play, the first stage of the Championship involved 288 golfers, each of whom played two rounds of 18 holes and one played on each of the two courses. The lowest scores over the 36 holes and ties for 64th place qualified to compete in the match play stage of the Championship.
After the first round of medal play on Monday, Murphy shot three-over par and was tied at 85th. On Tuesday, Murphy shot six-under par and was tied at 10th, along with seven others.
The scoring for the top 17 golfers consisted of: (T = Tied)
T1: -7 (2 golfers)
3: -6 (1 golfer)
T4: -5 (4 golfers)
T8: -4 (2 golfers)
T10: -3 (8 golfers) ++
++ Murphy finished in a tie for 10th out of 288 golfers.
On Wednesday, Murphy was two-down in match play through six holes to Jonas Baumgarner of Germany. When Murphy walked off the 11th green, the match was even. Murphy won the 15th and 16th holes to go two-up with two holes to play. On the 17th hole, Murphy made an unbelievable shot from the fringe to the sloping green that had plenty of break, and the ball settled down within a foot of the pin.
Murphy won the hole and went three-up with one hole left, thus winning the match 3&1.
By the way, Sam's brother, Mac, who also played at Tech, did not qualify for match play. Mac is caddying for his brother.
On Thursday, Murphy's opponent is Jamie Roberts from Muckhart, Scotland.
