FOOTBALL Mid-season Coaching Grades - 1st-year Head Coaches

Sonny Cumbie, Louisiana Tech: C-

2022 record: 2-4 | Louisiana Tech's 2021 record: 3-9
Previous job: Texas Tech offensive coordinator (interim head coach for final five games)
Grade when hired: B+

Louisiana Tech's firing of Skip Holtz was a surprise in last year's carousel, as the team had made seven consecutive bowl appearances and had suffered close losses to Mississippi State, SMU and NC State early in 2021. Cumbie brought youth, exciting offense and a Texas pedigree to a program with a strong tradition of quarterback play and producing points. The Bulldogs' offense is starting to show flashes, especially with wide receivers Tre Harris and Smoke Harris as well as tight end Griffin Hebert. Cumbie faced a brutal schedule, with just five home games and four of the first six on the road, including visits to Missouri and Clemson. Louisiana Tech has won both of its home games (Stephen F. Austin and UTEP) and enters a stretch against weaker Conference USA opponents that could result in some success.

FOOTBALL Inside the Numbers | LA Tech vs Rice

Can Tech force Rice to throw the football? McMahon threw 3 INTs at FAU last weekend, so they are going to want to run it for sure.

On the flip side, Cumbie has said multiple times how much Rice will change its coverages on the back end. He’s mentioned how it’s a much more complicated game plan than any opponent we’ve played all year, and that Rice is good at it. Does that cause him to be more conservative as a play caller? Does it cause confusion for McNeil at times?

FOOTBALL Game Week Practice Report — Rice

Cool, sunny day for the ‘Dogs today. Very windy.

As mentioned by Cumbie earlier today, Grubbs will be out for the foreseeable future.

Hebert & DJ Jackson will be out this week, maybe more.

Julien Lewis is still out.

Cole & Williamson are banged up, but they’ll play.

Sounds like Mozee might continue to get a shot to return kicks. He must be practicing really well.

Power isn’t in a great mood today. Defense getting a bunch of up/downs in today.

Morrison is straight in the middle in Grubbs’ spot.

Looks like Mote will play center again this week.

Myles Mason will play again this week.

This is as intense of a practice as I’ve seen the defense have all year. Against the scouts they are having to bust their tail.

In some trench rep run game, I don’t think I’ve seen the DL practice with this much intensity all year. Fisher was VERY VOCAL.

Need a W.

GAME THREAD GAME THREAD | LA Tech vs North Texas

Kickoff is schedule for 3 PM on ESPN+ from Denton on Saturday afternoon.

Tech is 7-1 all-time against North Texas in Denton.

Sonny Cumbie became the first Tech HC since Jack Bicknell to win his first conference game. Bicknell did it in 2001.

Louisiana Tech is 1-0 in C-USA play, while the Mean Green come in at 2-0 in conference action.

Parker McNeil will make his 5th consecutive start at quarterback for the Bulldogs.

Tyler Grubbs & Julien Lewis will miss the game for the Bulldogs. I would be surprised if Joe Mason & Maki Carabin played, as well.

Cyrus Allen did make the trip. We’ll see how much he plays at WR.

Looking at practice reps, I would expect Josh Mote to make his first career start at C on Saturday.

Griffin Hebert leads all TEs in America with 403 receiving yards.

Need a W. Let’s go!!!!
