GAME THREAD GAME THREAD | LA Tech vs Jacksonville State

Tech will close out its 2023 season on the road at Jacksonville State on Saturday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 PM on ESPN+.

Tech is 3-8. Jacksonville State is 7-3.

The Gamecocks are an 8.5-point favorite, O/U 54.5.

FOOTBALL Yesterday’s Defense

All season yall know I’ve harped on Power and his inability to coordinate a defense. I cried all season how he needs to get out of 2shell look when folk are running the ball down our throats. I harped on how he has been unsound all season long. I harped on how he doesn’t know how to make necessary adjustments to fix the leakage.

Yesterday I was talking to 2 guys and they mentioned that they coached at Faulkner College etc and mentioned that they knew Coach Blackwell etc. I told them that he left after 2021 and his knock was not getting the signals in on time and the chuckled 🤭 like they’ve heard it before.

They then mentioned to me “do yall stay in 2 deep” I said yes sir. They then proceeded to say “J State is just gonna keep running the ball”! I said yep.

Now, all season we have been -1 at least every game we have played in. Well yesterday we were -2/-3 because now this team ran with the QB!!!! There were times that J state guys didn’t even have anyone to block because Power didn’t have enough hats in the box. THE FOLKS HAD 300+ yards before halftime!!!!!

After half nothing changed! I just knew he would go cover 1 or Zero to stop the bloodshed. He did neither in which WE ARE ON THE CONFERENCE USA RECORD BOOKS FOR GIVING UP 520+ yards on the ground. WOW wow wow

RANT CUMBIE = ELLIS JOHNSON

It is now time for our leaders and our incoming president to really figure out what to do with Tech. We lack funding, we need fan/student support, and we need to be done with Cumbie. When he was hired I was pumped as I thought he did a great job at TT. My boss at the time said that Cumbie was a more conservative OC but he would be light years better than Skip. Cumbie is almost as good as a checked out Skip. EW and other leaders REALLY screwed up with this hire.

How do we get out of this mess? Well how did USM get out of this mess? They sold their home game for Nebraska to buy out Ellis Johnson. We must do the same with NC St or Kansas. That just solves getting rid of Cumbie. Even if we get rid of Cumbie that still doesn’t solve everything. We are still bottom of the barrel for budget. We had Briles and another coach interested in coming to Tech before settling on Cumbie. We couldn’t afford them. Henderson needs to make an immediate change to the fees BS and act like the adult in the room so that Tech can properly fund the university in all aspects. That will open the door for better sports but also raises for our current profs as well.

It is time for bold leaders and bold decisions to be made. If Henderson is the guy then I don’t envy him for taking the job because of the mess that he has inherited. If big moves are not made then indifference will settle in more and the university could easily become NSU or worse in the coming years.

FOOTBALL NW St @ Tech in 2026

The Northwestern State Demons will play at the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in 2026, FBSchedules.com has learned.

A copy of the football game contract with Louisiana Tech University was obtained from Northwestern State University via a state public records request.

Northwestern State will travel to take on Louisiana Tech at Joe Aillet Stadium in Ruston, La., on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026. The Demons will receive a $400,00 guarantee for the game, according to the copy of the contract.

Northwestern State University, located in Natchitoches, La., and Louisiana Tech University, located in Ruston, La., are only about 72 miles apart. The two schools have met 80 times on the gridiron and the Bulldogs lead the overall series 55-20-5.

The two schools met earlier this season in Ruston on Sept. 9. Louisiana Tech won that contest, 51-21, which was their second-consecutive win against the Demons

FOOTBALL The Eric Wood file

How would you assess Eric Wood’s performance as LA Tech athletic director?

  • A

    Votes: 2 2.2%
  • B

    Votes: 11 11.8%
  • C

    Votes: 44 47.3%
  • D

    Votes: 28 30.1%
  • F

    Votes: 8 8.6%

Dr. Wood was hired on October 23rd, 2020. So let’s look at the past three years, the results on and off the field and assess his performance as Athletic Director

Positives:
  • Baseball – 2021 C-USA West Division champions and 2022 C-USA Tournament champions
  • Softball – 2022 C-USA Regular Season champions
  • Women’s Basketball – 2022 C-USA West Division champions
  • Men’s Basketball – 2021 C-USA West Division champions
  • 987 single-year APR average and 981 multi-year APR average
  • 230 student-athletes named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (2021-22)
  • 75 student-athletes receiving the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal (2021-22)
  • 8 programs recording a perfect 1,000 single-year APR score (2021-22 and 2020-21)
  • Launch of the Aillet Society
  • Baseball has become a successful program with high fan interest
  • Good communicator and public speaker
Negatives:
  • Arguably an all time low in fan interest in football.
  • Arguably the worst 3 year stretch in football program history. The downturn of the program almost exactly aligns with Dr. Wood’s hire date.
  • Failed student vote on athletics fee, that was horribly and laughably botched in its execution in every facet.
  • Passed up in conference realignment. Largely out of his control, so not docking him too much here.
  • Made a horrendous football coach hire, parading an “air raid” hire that even us as fans at the time could clearly see was not not the case
  • Repeated broken equipment, streams, typo’d social media posts and other small embarrassments. File these under a lack of quality control or care about the little things
  • Fired successful coaches (soccer) and replaced them with clearly worse options
  • No full COA. No NIL foundation.
  • No notable, non-tornado-related facility improvements. Some slated for 2024.
Leaving emotion aside and looking at this purely pragmatically, I will give him an F and suggest that he would be fired after 3 years with these results in countless other professions.

Baseball is the only specific thing that one can comfortably say has improved during his tenure. All other sports are worse, budget hasn’t improved, fan support is in the toilet, and while Dr Wood has done a good job communicating a vision, it’s been three years and none of that vision has been actually, physically implemented. Rather, the vast majority of his scope is demonstrably worse than it was in October 2020.

What do we think? How are we feeling about the next 3 years under Dr. Wood’s leadership, based on what we’ve seen for the first 3?

BASKETBALL GAME THREAD | Dunkin’ Dogs vs UL-Monroe

Tech will travel to UL-Monroe for a non-conference matchup on Thursday night.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 PM on ESPN+.

Tech is a 10.5-point favorite.

Daniel Batcho is expected to make his Bulldog debut.

ULM is 1-1 overall. Blowout loss to Houston, then they went on the road and beat Central Michigan on Saturday.

OFF TOPIC Oakland A's moving to Las Vegas?

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Major League Baseball owners voted Thursday to allow the Oakland Athletics to move to Las Vegas, paving the way for the second relocation of a baseball team in the past half-century, sources told ESPN.

The potential move, which comes after more than two decades of failed efforts to secure a new stadium in the city to replace the aging Oakland Coliseum, needed backing from three-quarters of teams at the quarterly owners meetings. It received unanimous support despite unanswered questions about the team's near-term future and stadium plans.

Legal challenges from a teachers union in Nevada regarding the $380 million the state has committed to the construction of a $1.5 billion stadium on the Las Vegas Strip still could scuttle the move, but winning approval from owners marks a significant step toward Oakland losing its last major men's professional sports team.

Prior to the Montreal Expos moving to Washington in 2005, the last MLB team to relocate was the Washington Senators, who became the Texas Rangers in 1972. The A's moved to Oakland from Kansas City in 1968 and have won four World Series in their 56 seasons in the city.

OFF TOPIC RIP to Former University of Houston/NFL CB DJ Haden

Sad news out of Houston this week as several former U of H student athletes were killed in a two car crash in which the other car ran a red light at high speeds. Wanted to share a story involving one of those young men and former Tech WR Quinton Patton.

Most all of us should remember the very competitive two game series between Houston and Tech back in 2011 and 2012. The 2011 game was a heartbreaking Case Keenum fueled comeback that left those in the Joe speechless, and the return 2012 trip to Houston a shootout which proved to be Tevin King's coming out party as the Bulldogs escaped victorious. In that matchup you had future first round draft pick DJ Haden matched up against future NFL WR Quinton Patton.

Later on in that season DJ suffered a freak accident at practice and almost died of a heart injury. While he was in a Houston area hospital recovering QP drove down to pay a surprise visit out of respect earned facing each other on the football field. That visit really left an impact on Haden to the point that he and Patton began to train together for the NFL combine, and ultimately stayed friends throughout the rest of their careers.

This young man was one who came from a great family and truly loved giving back to the local community after recently returning home from his almost 10 year NFL career to coach a local high school.
