BASKETBALL Dunkin’ Dogs 2023-2024 Starting Lineup/Rotation

This is what I’ve gathered so far, and I think this is something that is going to change. There’s a lot of spots that are still battling it out for minutes.

PG: Sean Newman, Crawford or Henderson
SG: Chavez, Henderson, Ree or Vertus
SF: Henry, Jordan Turner
PF: Isaiah Crawford, Mangum or Turner
C: Batcho (If eligible), Mangum, Allen, Miller

- I think Mangum starts at the 5 if Batcho isn’t eligible. Will Allen will still get plenty of minutes.

- Miller is still coming back from the foot issue, so they’ll ease him back early in the year.

- Henderson’s athleticism and speed has really impressed, particularly on defense.

- Lots of battles still ongoing for minutes at the 2-3-4. Might the rotation might take a few games to truly figure out at those spots, but Chavez, Henry, and Iso will definitely have roles.

FOOTBALL Cumbie vs Skip's Football Program

Difference is Skip had a great run(Bowl games, NFL Drafts, etc) . I think will pulled the trigger too fast for an unknown new coach.

Skip's defensive Coord killed him(Blackwell). The melt down at Miss St. the SMU Hail Mary, and other defensive blunders. Kids looking to the sideline waiting on Blackwell to signal in the calls while the other team is snapping the ball, etc.

The main difference in Skip's program vs Cumbie's
1. Skip had better Asst Coaches overall(guys that coached FBS and not a bunch of GA's, Juco, analyst types).
2. Skip's staff were better recruiters
3. Skip's staff developed players and played to their strengths
4. Skip would NEVER kick Ben off the practice field
5. Skip practices were tougher and more physical.
6. Skip's teams could compete with some P5 guys vs now we get beat by the likes of Sammy Houston.

We better get this right or LA Tech Football will be in a very deep hole. Very Deep.

FOOTBALL Future Staff

If I’m Cumbie, I would make the following changes.

On Defense
I would get a proven DC. We are paying Power $230k. Plenty of guys available that’s proven.

Find 1 guy to coach corners and safeties.

Find a DT Coach that can teach fundamentals

Find a DE/Edge coach

I would retain Cortez Carter young energetic coach.

So a total of 4 coaches on Defense.

On Offense

I would hire OC that coaches QB’s so Cumbie can walk around and monitor his entire team during practice.

I would keep Teddy as he is a good recruiter and respected on the staff

I would replace Parr & Brown with Isaiah Graham coaching Outside WR and bring back Paul Turner to coach Inside WR. I would also make Paul Turner recruiting Coordinator.

I would keep Nathan Young to coach OLine.

Special Teams
I would keep Sharp and his salary.

Strength Coach
I would replace him as our team was the softest most injured 🤕 team in the country. Also one with a personality as Scholtz has the personality of a rock/boulder. Plus we are paying him a bunch of money upwards of $170k. There are plenty of guys available for much less.

FOOTBALL PFF Player Grades | LA Tech vs Sam Houston State

Takeaways:

- Bachmeier excels throwing down the field
- OL only allows 7 QB pressures & 1 sack
- Randle & Evans play best games of season
- Defense has 9 TFL & 2 sacks, caused havoc most of the afternoon for Shoemaker

FOOTBALL Cumbie: Fact Checker

After listening to Cumbie’s recent post-game interviews and press conferences where he has said we are “better internally”, “turning a corner”, and “much improved,” I decided it was time for him to be fact-checked. I created a spreadsheet with 26 different statistics comparing our teams for the past 10 years and to compare this year to last year. I did throw out 2020 as everything from 2020 is skewed by the COVID quarantines, etc. What was discovered was fascinating.

Scoring: This year’s offense averages the least points of any team in the past 10 years at 26.73.

First Downs per game: 2nd fewest first downs this season. Last season was the fewest.

Rushing yards per game: has improved by 7.1 per game from last year, but is still 58 yards less than our best season average in 2015.

Pass yards per game: has decreased by 5 yards from last season despite more talented starting QB.

Rush yards per attempt: has improved by .35 yards per attempt

Pass yards per attempt: has improved by .28 yards per attempt, and is our 3rd best average in last 10 seasons.

Total Offense: has improved by 2 yards a game from last season’s 2nd to last effort.

Average yards per play: improved by .253 yards this season

Kickoff return average: 2nd to worst in past 10 years. Down almost 2 yards from last year.

Punt return average: has declined this season by 4.2 yards per attempt

Punt average distance: Oshendorf has the highest average in the past 10 years by over 4 yards!

Penalties: This year’s team is our worst penalized team in the past 10 years and last year’s team was the 2nd most penalized team.

Time of Possession: in line with previous season averages. 13 seconds longer than last season

3rd Down %: the past two seasons have been our worst 2 conversion rates, with this season being the worst by 5%.

Sacks Against per game: last season was our worst and this season has improved by 0.57 per game

RZ Scoring %: this has been our best scoring percentage in the past 10 years, however, it’s been our worst number of opportunities per game in the red zone. Last season was our worst scoring %.

Turnovers per game : This season we’ve had the 3rd fewest turnovers of any team in the past 10 years.

Turnover margin: this season is our worst turnover margin at -0.9 and last season was our 2nd worst. Why the fewest turnovers, but highest margin? Lack of defensive takeaways.

Opponents yards and opponents points per game: We’ve improved from our worst season last year (9th) to 6th this year in both categories.

Opponents 3rd down conversion %: 41.6% this year is up one notch from last year, but still in bottom 3 of last 10 years.

Home winning %: this year’s 33% winning percentage at the Joe is the worst in the past 10 years and a significant departure from the 70% home winning percentage since joining FBS.

Strength of Schedule: this season our SOS is 120 and last year was 124. Quite a departure from 2014’s 67th.

Overall: Compiling all the numbers, we have improved from our overall worst team last year to 7th out of 9 this season, but this is largely due to slight defensive improvements (from the worst defense last year), our best punter since Ryan Allen, low number of red zone trips, improved pass protection, and better QB play resulting in increased yards per attempt and decreased turnovers. Our offense has become all too dependent on the home-run ball and has consistently demonstrated an inability to string together sustained drives as indicated by our abysmal 3rd down conversion percentage of 31.9%. Our defense is not creating takeaways and allowing opponents a nearly 42% 3rd down conversion rate. Despite some statistical improvements made, the most important statistics of all, wins and points scored haven’t improved and are at decade lows.

FOOTBALL Defensive Staff

This is why Cumbie is on the hot seat. There are issues on offense as well, however this is criminal.

Login to view embedded media ****watch the 1st play and pause before they snap the ball****

Look at the 1st touchdown run. We are soooo unsound it's criminal. Let's start with the defensive line. Look at their alignment. To the field we have an outflanked 3tech. The nose is shaded to the shortside(3DL to the shortside of the field). There is not an edge to the field. NO EDGE. So again "WE ARE PRE SNAP BEAT". Meaning before they even snap the ball, we are beat and mis-aligned. I guess no one in the box NOR Power saw this and called time-out. As the play starts the wing to the field doesn't even have anyone to block. #6 based on alignment has Field "A" gap. Again, we don't have an EDGE. Easy TD. Power in his famous 2-shell look and not enough hats. Sam Houston knew it

Strength should've been called to the field. Check Cov 3 or 1-Rat.
