BASEBALL Lane Burroughs & Josh Taylor speak w/ Media - 3.29.2023

Lane Burroughs:

  • Really proud of our guys the last four games. It feels like we are starting to click. We are putting together really quality at bats, and we are getting quality starts on the mound. Didn’t defend as well the last couple of games, but we’ll get that cleaned up.
  • We’ll stay with Fincher, Sparks, TBA on the mound. We will use Greg on Friday or Saturday if we need to. We are trying to use him in an opener type role when he starts. He had a lot of traffic on the bases on Sunday, but he managed to keep us in the game. When you limit a team to five runs on a Sunday, you feel good about it.
  • Dallas Baptist is really good, but we want to go to Omaha in our program. To get there you have to beat really good team. Coach Heefner is one of the best coaches in the country. They may come in and kick our teeth in, but we are going to fight. We aren’t going to back down from anyone, that’s who we are in this program.
  • When I started seeing some 12-hop ground balls get through last night, you could feel the breakthrough coming. I hate to talk about breaks because I believe in creating your own breaks, but last night was one of the first times all year we had the breaks go our way. It’s been funny how sound teams have played against us all year.
  • When you’re struggling to score runs as a coach you want to play the best hitting lineup you got. But we knew we had to get McLeod back at 3rd, that’s his best position. Ince is hurt now, so we’ll roll with Safford at SS. He’s a really good defender, he’s tough, and his teammates love him. He’s bought into this program, and if he gets a hit or two to fall he’ll take off like some other guys. We’ll stick with this lineup and get Evans & a few others some at bats when the situations present themselves.
  • On AD stretching single to double last night, he’s playing free and loose. That’s what we want all our guys to do. We give him the green light, and he’s playing so aggressively. It’s starting to rub off on some others because we’ve had guys not take off in green light scenarios. They were playing too tight, but we are seeing guys play with confidence the last 4-5 games.
  • Phil scolded a ball to left in his first at bat last night. When he uses the middle of the field, he’s at his best. When he’s scuffling, he’s swinging at everything and not taking his walks. He’s really taking his walks lately and it’s paying off. He’s our captain and leader, we need him. He knows that.

BASEBALL GAME THREAD | Diamond Dogs vs Sacramento State - (3.28)

Interesting non-conference matchup tonight at the Love Shack against Sacramento State tonight.

The Hornets will be at SFA starting on Thursday.

First pitch is set for 6 PM.

I didn’t catch who was on the mound for Tech tonight, but I would assume Rawley Hector.

The Hornets are an old WAC foe for Louisiana Tech. The two teams have squared off 31 times.

BASEBALL GAME THREAD | Diamond Dogs vs WKU - (3.24 - 3.26)

First C-USA road trip of the year for the Diamond Dogs at WKU this weekend.

Friday - 6 PM
Saturday - 6 PM
Sunday - 1 PM

First two games will not be broadcasted, but the Sunday game will be on HSSN on Facebook.

The Hilltoppers have a first-year HC, and he comes from the JC ranks. What’s that mean? They are going to play their tails off.

They have really good offensive numbers, but they haven’t played anyone. Gotta be one of the worst schedules in the country. However, Tech’s pitching has obviously had major issues so we’ll see how it goes.

Need a series win. Bad.

BASEBALL GAME THREAD | Diamond Dogs vs ULM - (3.21)

Louisiana Tech will make the quick trip down I-20 to take on ULM on Tuesday night.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM. You can listen to the game on SportsTalk 97.7 FM.

Tech has won 15 of the last 16 in the series.

I’m not sure who will start for Tech, maybe Bates? We’ll see.

Need a W.
