BASEBALL D1Baseball Chat - 1.17.2023

Nugget on Tech:

Guest: Does Louisiana Tech have the arms to be a top 25 program this season?
Kendall Rogers: Guest — yes, I think so. I think if you look at the Bulldogs, they have a true staff ace in Jonathan Fincher. Lane was really excited about Greg Martinez during fall ball with his higher velocity (up to 98) and electric overall stuff, and there are some really nice JUCO pitching pieces + A&M transfer Rawley Hector, who was a command machine in the fall. LT is going to be pretty dang good IMO.

FOOTBALL 2023 Depth Chart - 1.19.2023

Here is my latest breakdown to give everyone a good idea on where everything stands.

Offense

QB: Hank Bachmeier (Boise State), Matthew Downing or Jack Turner, Evan Bullock*

RB: Marquis Crosby, Charvin Thornton or Tyre Shelton (Miami OH), Keith Willis*

WR: Cyrus Allen, Kyle Maxwell, Solomon Lewis, Zyion Claville

WR: Julien Lewis, DeColdest Crawford (Nebraska), Marlion Jackson, Dakota Williams*

WR: Smoke Harris, Tahj Magee, Matthew McCallister, Dedrick Latulas*

TE: Nate Jones or Ryan Rivera (Cal Poly), Kendrick Rucker, John Locke, Eli Finley*

LT: Dakota White, Biron Rossell, Erron Bean, Troy Smith*

LG: Bert Hale, Joe Ta'ase

C: Abraham Delfin, Ray Kelly, Roy Brackins*

RG: Jerren Gilbert, Landon Nelson, Elijah Bowser, Ja'Marion Kennedy*

RT: Carson Bruno, Jonah Brewster, Kenneth Bannister, Hayden Christman*, Keystone Allison*

Notes on Offense

- Injured/Out: TE/WR Devonta Lee

- 8 returning starters on offense

- 43 players on scholarship on offense...I would assume this means they might try to move a guy or two out after spring if need be, and it might also hurt the chances of them pursuing Carson May

- Landon Nelson has been moved to guard

Defense

DE: Deshon Hall, DJ Johnson or Jayden Gray (Iowa State)

DT: Keivie Rose, Tavian Coleman (Utah State)

DT: Rasheed Lyles, Shaq Spears or Zion Nason, Lip Whitaker*

DE/OLB: Ezekiel Campbel (Lenoir-Rhyne), Mykol Clark or J'Dan Burnett, Charlie Robinson* or Obi Okeke*

ILB: Hugh Davis, Jeslord Boateng (Akron), Zy Ford

ILB: Brevin Randle (SFA), Zach Zimos (Arkansas) or Kolbe Fields (LSU), Colton Deckard* or Demardrick Blunt*

OLB/Nickel: Cecil Singleton, Joriell Washington

CB: Willie Roberts, Jhamal Shelby, Ked Harper*

CB: Cedric Woods or Jakelyn Morgan, Devontae Mozee, David Webb*

S: Myles Heard*, Zion Hopes (Tulsa), Cam Hill*

S: DeMarcus Griffin-Taylor (Houston), Michael Richard* or Jacob Fields*

Notes on Defense

- Up to 37 scholarship players on defense.....Cumbie said last off-season they want 41 on both sides of the ball.

- 6 returning starters on defense

Special Teams

K: Jacob Barnes or Buck Buchanan

P: Patrick Rea or Arlind Bengu

DS: ???

Final Notes

- The * guys are new signees or transfer commitments. Michael Richard is the only high school player that will be in for spring. I put the school next to the transfer.

- 83 guys on scholarship based on our numbers, I think. @cfc004 will double-check.

- Bold are returning starters

- Roster is starting to look much more competitive

Okay all you baseball fiends, here's your chance to hang with the boys and get the scoop firsthand. The original tickets went on sale last Wednesday for boosters and Thursday for the general public. All 52 tables were sold in under 30 hours. If you missed out on that blitz of a sale, here's your ticket. The only difference is you have to hold your plate and sit in the stands.

BASKETBALL GAME THREAD | Dunkin’ Dogs vs Middle Tennessee

4 PM tip-off on ESPN+ between the Bulldogs & Blue Raiders.

First time MTSU has come to Ruston since January 12, 2019.

Blue Raiders might be the most athletically gifted team in C-USA. Really tough match-up for Tech.

Tech is favored by 3.5 points.

BASKETBALL GAME THREAD | Dunkin’ Dogs vs Western Kentucky

Dunkin’ Dogs will try to get back in the win column tonight against Western Kentucky.

Tip-off is set for 8 PM on CBS Sports Network.

Tech is a 3.5-point favorite.

All-time series is even at 20 wins apiece. Tech won both matchups last season.

Dayvion McKnight is really good for WKU. Physical guard that likes to get downhill and shoot mid-range jumpers.

Sharp is averaging over 4 blocks per game. Will be interesting to see how Tech chooses to attack him.

FOOTBALL What would a 2023 depth chart look like for Louisiana Tech right now?

I've had a few of you request this, so I wanted to put this depth chart together. Obviously, there will be a number of new players added over the next few months.

Also, this is based on the personnel that we know is still on the roster.

Offense

QB: Landry Lyddy, Jack Turner, Evan Bullock*

RB: Marquis Crosby, Charvin Thornton, Keith Willis*

WR: Cyrus Allen, Solomon Lewis, Zyion Claville

WR: Julien Lewis, Kyle Maxwell, Dakota Williams*

WR: Smoke Harris, Tahj Magee, Matthew McCallister, Dedrick Latulas*

TE: Nate Jones, Kendrick Rucker, John Locke, Eli Finley*

LT: Dakota White, Biron Rossell, Erron Bean, Troy Smith*

LG: Bert Hale, Joe Ta'ase

C: Ray Kelly, Landon Nelson, Roy Brackins*

RG: Jerren Gilbert, Elijah Bowser, Ja'Marion Kennedy*

RT: Carson Bruno, Jonah Brewster, Kenneth Bannister, Hayden Christman*, Keystone Allison*

Notes on Offense

- Injured/Out: QB Matthew Downing, TE/WR Devonta Lee, WR Marlion Jackson, C Abraham Delfin

- There are 40 offensive players on scholarship (not including Jack Turner, it's not certain he gets one) based on the numbers that we have.

- Need J Lew to emerge as a playmaker at WR. Get that, and you can put together a decent product with improved QB play.

- 8 returning starters on offense

Defense

DE: Deshon Hall, DJ Johnson

DT: Keivie Rose, Shaq Spears

DT: Rasheed Lyles, Zion Nason, Lip Whitaker*

DE/OLB: Mykol Clark or J'Dan Burnett, Charlie Robinson* or Obi Okeke*

ILB: Hugh Davis, Zy Ford

ILB: Brevin Randle, Colton Deckard* or Demardrick Blunt*

OLB/Nickel: Cecil Singleton, Joriell Washington

CB: Willie Roberts, Jhamal Shelby, Ked Harper*

CB: Cedric Woods or RJ Johnson or Jakelyn Morgan, Devontae Mozee, David Webb*

S: Myles Heard*, Cam Hill*

S: Michael Richard* or Jacob Fields*

Notes on Defense

- I did not include Eric Randall.

- There are only 28 players on scholarship on defense.....Cumbie said last off-season they want 41 on both sides of the ball.

- 6 returning starters on defense

- SCARY

Special Teams

K: Jacob Barnes or Buck Buchanan

P: Patrick Rea or Arlind Bengu

DS: ???

Final Notes

- If you have 13 spots available, you could easily make the argument to give every single one to the defense. You think last year's defense was bad, you ain't seen nothing yet!!

- The * guys are new signees or transfer commitments

- Bold are returning starters

- Share your thoughts!

BASKETBALL GAME THREAD | Dunkin’ Dogs vs UAB

Big match-up against the Blazers this afternoon.

3 PM tip-off on Stadium.

UAB is really struggling on defensive end. They’ve allowed at least 80 in 3 straight games.

On the flip side, they’ve scored at least 80 in 13 of 17 games this season.

This is going to be a fast pace, high scoring game.

Can Tech slow down Jelly Walker? It won’t be easy. He’s going to score his points, but Tech has to make him do it in an inefficient manner.

UAB is 6th in the nation attempting 18.2 free throws per game.
