Scouting FIU
FIU comes in at 17-27 overall, 8-16 in C-USA play.
Top Draft Prospects
RHP Tyler Myrick
CF Alec Sanchez
RHP Jermaine Vanheynenigen
Impact Freshmen
SS Steven Ondina
SS Dante Girardi
OF Mario Zabala
Top Pitchers
RHP Tyler Myrick -- classic case of another team throwing its best guy on Saturday, Myrick will run it up to 97 with the heater, he's walked 23 in 57.2 IP which is a tough high, also given up 24 extra base hits
LHP Garrett Rules -- transfer from Alabama, really good curveball, given up 8 HR in 46.2 IP
RHP Steven Casey -- really good change-up, was expected to be the closer, doesn't give a ton of length, walks can be an issue
RHP Jermaine Vanheynenigen -- walks are a major issue with 18 in 13.2 IP, but the fastball has been up to 102 at times
RHP Angel Tiburcia -- closer, walks are an issue
You get the picture, really talented stuff with lots of guys with good stuff, but they walk a bunch of hitters. 5.8 BB per 9 IP.
Top Hitters
OF Justin Farmer -- .289, 8 HR, 36 RBI, really good player, has a chance to be drafted, not the biggest guy in the world but has pop
3B Dante Girardi -- son of Phillies manager Joe Girardi, .219, 1 HR, 15 RBI, Ks a bunch, BB very little, classic case of a young hitter
1B Adrian Figueroa -- big 6'6 1B, hitting .335, 2 HR, 31 RBI, hasn't really produced the power that you'd expect, but he's a FR
2B Derek Cartaya -- small guy, senior, just plays the game the right way, hitting .287, 2 HR, 16 RBI, more BB than Ks
Farmer and Figueroa are the guys that can't beat you, their top hitter is Juan Teixiera but he's been out for over a month.
They don't have a ton of power, don't steal a ton of bases, will bunt at times.
Defensively, they make a bunch of errors.
On paper, this is a series that Tech should at a minimum win 3 games in. However, the game isn't played on paper. Need to take care of business and keep the train rolling.
