Sorry I didn’t get this out this morning, but here it is:
Tech will host Charlotte this weekend at JC Love Field. First pitch is set for 6PM Friday, 2PM Saturday, and 1PM on Sunday. Weather is in the forecast, we’ll see what kind of adjustments are made to the series, if any.
Matt Miller, Logan Robbins, and Logan Bailey will get the starts this weekend. Possibly a quick hook will be ready for Miller. Hopefully he can bounce back after two pretty rough outings.
Bailey seems like he is getting stronger as the season progresses.
Tech’s offense must get things going early on Friday. The slow starts are concerning. The big left-hander, Maciejewski, which Tech will see on Friday night is good. He isn’t overpowering, but he’s got some size and has good off speed offerings.
Charlotte was picked to finish 6th in the league in the preseason. They have really struggled on the road at 3-9. They do have some quality midweek wins over Wake Forest and Arkansas.
Let’s take a look at their pitching staff first.
Josh Maciejewski will get the start on Friday night. Like I said above, he isn’t overpowering at all, but he’s a presence on the mound. He has taken well to the Friday night role this year. In 54.2 IP, he has a 2.98 era and has allowed only 46 hits while striking out 52. He gets a good angle on his pitches which makes him difficult to hit. Honestly, he remind me a lot of Leal, big frame but doesn’t throw hard. Tons of strikes. He has gotten in a little bit better shape this year than previous seasons.
Matt Brooks will get the start on Saturday. He has had a pretty inconsistent year after a strong freshman season. In 8 appearances, he has 5.82 era in 38.2 IP. He has allowed 46 hits, walked 15, and struck out 32.
Joey Cooney will get the start on Sunday, if past history means anything. In 42.1 IP he has a 4.25 era. He has allowed 40 hits, walked 12, and struck out 26. He’s a left-hander.
None of the three starters have overpowering stuff by any means. Neither did Labas on Tuesday, so that may not mean a thing.
Phillip Perry was expected to be a key bullpen cog but he has really struggled to the tune of a 7.71 era in 21 IP. Opponents are hitting .321 off of him.
Jonah Patton will get some time out the pen as well. He has a 4.58 era in 19.2 IP. He has allowed 19 hits and walked 14. Patience at the plate against him will be crucial, he will walk you. Patton is the closer.
Matt Horkey has been the 49ers best reliever. In 22.1 IP, he has a 2.82 era, but opponents are hitting .293. He attacks the strike zone and rarely walks hitters. He’s a left-hander.
As a staff, the 49ers have a 4.98 era so Tech should have a good weekend at the plate. In 281.2 IP, they have allowed 295 hits, walked 108, and struck out 231. Opponents are hitting .269.
Offensively, Charlotte lost a ton off of their 2017 team but have not missed a beat.
They are hitting .292 as a club and scoring 6 runs per game.
Harris Yett is having the best year with a .392 average to go along with 6 home runs and 28 RBI. Yett is the catcher and has only thrown out 22% base stealers. He’s a JC signee that they obviously hit on in a big way.
Jackson Mims is their best hitter. He’s hitting .356 with 5 home runs and 23 RBI. He had 20 doubles a year ago. He can rake.
Reece Hampton is the best pro prospect on the team and is hitting .324 with 1 home run and 21 RBI. He also has 9 stolen bases. He’s a switch hitter.
Dominick Cammarata rounds out the guys that are over .300 with a .301 average to go along with 5 home runs and 16 RBI.
Tech didn’t matchup with these guys well at all last since they have so many left-handed hitters. This year should be different which Burroughs has mentioned numerous occasions.
The 49ers have made 45 errors in 32 games. Not great.
Tech is more talented than this club, but it must show up on the field.
