Today we take a look at the safety position for 2020.
Losses from 2019: L'Jarius Sneed (73 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 3 INTs, 6 PBUs), Darryl Lewis (56 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 INT, 3 PBUs)
Projected Depth Chart for 2020:
S: Bee Jay Williamson (RS SO), Dallas Taylor-Cortez (RS SO) or Jemaurian Jones (RS SO) or Khiry Morrison (RS FR)
S: Khalil Ladler (GR TR), Jaiden Cole (RS JR)
Others on the Roster: Kollin Hurt (RS JR), Christian Archangel (RS FR), Jamison Kelly (FR)
The addition of Khalil Ladler was obviously big. He has a good bit of experience, started in the ACC, and will fit in perfectly.
Bee Jay Williamson obviously earned a starting spot coming out of camp as a RS FR a season ago, but was unable to keep the spot. The staff has raved about him since the day he stepped on campus.
Jaiden Cole just hasn't necessarily progressed as many had hoped he would. That's not to say he can't be a contributor, but there's a reason Ladler was brought in. Hopefully it pushes Cole to work harder.
Taylor-Cortez or Jones is going to be the back-up at the other safety spot when needed. I just don't think Tech would toss Morrison to the wolves if there was an injury back there, because he's not ready. I know Taylor-Cortez and Jones were signed at CBs, but they come to Tech with position versatility.
It's never clicked for Hurt. He has the athleticism, but he doesn't have the tenacity.
Big year upcoming for Archangel, he needs to show that he can be a contributor down the road, not just happy to be at this level.
If there is a TR FR that might sneak into the lineup some, Kelly could be one of the guys. He will knock you out from the safety spot. I think he'll contribute early on in his career.
Safety was a position of strength in 2019, and I believe it'll be a position of strength once again in 2020. I guess you could argue that depth may be a concern, but I think they'll be fine. Overall, what is your confidence in the safety position? 1-10?
