So I was taking a look at the Conference USA standings, and began to wonder if Bonus Play had a chance to work right away. Let’s take a look.
NET Rankings:
ODU: 74
La Tech: 105
Southern Miss: 106
WKU: 123
North Texas: 132
UTSA: 133
UAB: 139
FAU: 152
Marshall: 165
FIU: 194
If ODU wins out all the way to the C-USA Championship before losing, they would finish at 27-7 overall and 15-3 in C-USA play. They would also have wins over VCU (35) & Syracuse (44). They would be 9-3 on the road as well.
The one thing holding them back would be a predicted strength of schedule of 214. For comparison, Tech’s SOS is 181 right now. Jeff Jones didn’t do a great job with scheduling for ODU.
Ultimately I think they’ll come up short if that were to happen, but I think Bonus Play can pay off in future years. What say you?
Conference RPI Rankings Since Tech Entered C-USA:
2013-2014: 13
2014-2015: 17
2015-2016: 22
2016-2017: 23
2017-2018: 15
2018-2019: 13
The conferences ahead of C-USA are: Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, Big East, AAC, Pac 12, WCC, MAC, Ivy League, Southern, and Atlantic 10.
C-USA won 51% of its out of conference games, the MAC won 63% of theirs.
I think C-USA can be a top 10 basketball league. With the league noticeably improving in recent years, hopefully it happens soon.
