Today we continue to look at Tech’s 2018 season by looking at all of the data that Pro Football Focus makes available. For the season, J’Mar had a 69.9 overall grade. That number was down from 70.7 a season ago. Essentially he was the same QB, that’s the concern.

For the season, J’Mar threw for 3,154 yards, 15 TDs, and 10 INTs. He completed 57% of his throws. According to PFF, he was sacked 32 times, had 7 balls batted at the line, suffered from 37 drops, and had to throw the ball away 23 times. He also scrambled 26 times.

Here are his individual game grades:

USA: 49
Southern: 90.6
LSU: 70.5
UNT: 50.8
UAB: 55.5
UTSA: 74.9
UTEP: 62.3
FAU: 55
MSU: 44.9
Rice: 66.7
USM: 80.3

Hawaii: 66.8

J’Mar was pressured the 4th most times of any QB in the country. He was pressured on 166/490 (34%) drop backs. On the plays that he was pressured, he completed 49/121 (41%), for 808 yards, 5 TDs, and 6 INTs. This easily supports the theory that he really struggles when things get off schedule. He was “accurate” on 57% of those throws. The highest % of accurate throws when pressured was 77% by Kyler Murray at Oklahoma.

He was kept clean on 324/490 (66%) drop backs. When he had a clean pocket, he completed 197/313 (63%) for 2,061 yards, 9TDs, and 3 INTs. He was “accurate” on 74% of those throws. The highest % of accurate throws with a clean pocket was Minshew II at Washington State at 83%.

Tech ran play action 91 times this season. On those 91 drop backs, J’Mar completed 52/81 (64%), for 666 yards, 4 TDs, and 2 INTs. Minshew II led the country completing 85% on play action throws.

J’Mar had a 71.4 passing grade this season per PFF. That ranked 72nd in the country. Charlotte QB, Reynolds was 70th, FIU QB, Morgan was 71st. UTSA QB, Grundy, was 75th, Marshall QB, Green, was 79th, FAU QB, Robison, was 89th, USM QB, Abraham was 93rd, ULM QB, Evans, was 99th. Kyler Murray led the country with a 93.2 passing grade. Mason Fine was 3rd in the country with a 91.5 grade.

Here is a massive issue that we have seen all year: J’Mar ranked 115th in the nation out of 148 qualifiers, when it comes to accuracy on deep balls (20+ yards down field). He was accurate on only 33% of those throws. Stockstill from MTSU led the country in accuracy on deep balls at 66.7%.

J’Mar ranked 48th in the country in adjusted completion percentage at 70.1%. The formula for adjusted completion % is ((Completions + Drops) / (Attempts-Throw Aways-Spikes-Batted Balls-Hit as Thrown).
