The freshmen are YOUNG...one just turned 18 and another turns 18 in August. All the freshmen are very good and if they can grow up some the team will be very good this year.
I got to talk extensively with Daquan, the guard from Baltimore. He is no bigger than his 5'11" listing. It was kind of nice to talk with one of the guys and not have to strain my neck...especially after talking to Slim for 20 minutes. He is admittedly shy and seemed to me like he is slow to mesh with the other guys. But, he said he is really happy to be here. He told me he chose Tech and Ruston because he wants to be somewhere that he can focus on his studies and basketball. I picked on him about that being a really good media answer to my question. He laughed and said the really is the reason. Ha. He wasn't sure about Ruston at first, but now that he has been here a little while, he said he is starting to figure it out. Apparently he is lightning quick and is a baller...so his shyness turns off on the court. Also, he absolutely had a Georgetown offer. I think when this kid figures it out, he is going to be fun to watch. I hope he grows a few inches. If you guys see him, talk to him. Welcome him. Tell him what you know about him. I did that and he came out of his shell. He's got a big smile with braces.
I talked with Slim about his issue. He is practicing. Keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer for August. He and everyone else are very confident.
Omar is a big strong dude. If he can learn to play around the basket more he will be serviceable. I gathered that he will be a step back from Merrill for a while, but he might have bigger potential. He has work to do with his game. If he gets in the weight room and does what some of the others have done, the kid will eventually be a rock in the middle.
Jalen looks bigger than I expected him to be. 6'5" yes, but he looks bigger than 185 to me.
Oliver is a bigger body than Jy'lan Washington, but a year in the weight room will do him wonders. If he puts in the work, look out. Jy'lan has done some work with the weights, but he is still really thin.
I didn't get to visit with Jakolby. He's a 6'4" forward. I'll have to see him on the court first.
Derric Jean looks like a different player. I cannot wait to see him on the court again. Coach is hoping Skip doesn't try and take him. He's going to be a freak on the court. This dude makes me think of KD with a basketball body type. Holy cow.
Erik has slimmed down, put on more muscle and gotten much stronger, and weighs about the same. He will play professionally somewhere. No doubt by anyone in the room.
I had some discussion about Merrill and Dayon transferring. Stupid decisions at this point. Especially Merrill. Maybe they prove everyone wrong.
Oliver beat Qiydar in NBA Live. It was entertaining. I thought Q was going to cry. Told him it was good for his ego. That he needs to come down to the ground every once in a while.
On a side note, Zero is back at home. He has some offers to play in Europe.
