I know soccer fans are a different breed, but I couldn't help but be amazed at the pregame energy and excitement at the Portland Timbers MLS game this weekend. This is an expansion team that didn't start playing until 2011 and has only made the playoffs twice. Granted, they won the championship last season, but this atmosphere is not new.
This is a 4 minute video from the beginning of their 2nd season and explains their fan group.
This from their 3rd season
The main driver is a devoted core fan group, (timbersarmy.org) that sells merchandise to fund charitable giving and to pay for their gameday tifo, which is a game by game display of banners, flags, etc (https://timbersarmy.org/game-day/tifo). The last game was a huge Freddy Krueger display. The fan site also has a chant sheet that was made in 2011 and has not changed (https://timbersarmy.org/game-day/chants).
So maybe not all of that is doable, but I love the thought of their version of the yell leader would be awesome, especially on the student side. That along with handouts of a chant sheet at each game would go a long way to getting people on the same page during the game and throw in some excitement. There could be different chants for different situations on offense or defense...for going into or coming out of halftime. It would just need some thought and organization.
