All I've seen on this board is that Tech is not looking at going independent in football, period, end of story. I really don't understand the reticence. Someone please explain what I'm missing and why we can't go independent in FB.
So here's my plan. Shoot holes in it.
1. Pass a student fee, and a big one, IMMEDIATELY. We need a $40M budget.
2. Decide on scheduling agreements with the remaining 4 CUSA schools for FB, MBB, and Baseball. Disband C-USA. No exit fees.
3. Begin mobilizing a FB schedule from 2023 forward.
- We'll have a stable of teams to pick from, including Liberty, NMSU, UMass, UCONN, ND, Army, and the remaining 4 CUSA programs. Add 2 buy games, and the schedule isn't that bad.
4. Shop the olympic sports to any conference that will take them. Southland/SBC/WAC/MVC/Whatever.
5. Cement an independent deal with the Indy Bowl for a 9 win team or better.
6. Budget a few million extra to allow Konkol to buy some quality games for at-large consideration.
6. Accept a peanuts package from ESPN for ESPN+ distribution with the ability for them to elevate us for good games. Basically we can get some of the production costs covered.
I agree that collecting exit fees and sitting in C-USA with a bunch of FCS callups would be the easy thing to do. But I am worried that if Tech gives up trailblazing, then we're at the end of the rope. Bringing up FCS programs is a gamble IF we don't get into another conference within a few short years.
Obviously with no money, it makes no sense. But seeing the media coverage of Tech.... we've managed to be portrayed as a bunch of snobs who don't know our place. I say we double down on the image, put up the money, and start winning REAL games against big name opponents. I'd rather us be road warrior giant killers and miss out on bowl games. Make them respect us.
