Louisiana Tech will travel to El Paso Saturday afternoon for their final road game of 2017. UTEP has yet to win a game in 2017 and the numbers back that up. Let’s take a look at what Tech will need to do from an offensive standpoint to have success against the Miners.
Tech Offense UTEP Defense (Allowed)
PPG 28.3 37.1
Rush YPG 156.5 229.4
Pass YPG 247.7 218.5
Total YPG 404.2 447.9
Yards Per Play 5.7 6.3
Turnovers (Forced) 11 12
Third Down % 37% 49%
Touchdowns 32 51
Red-Zone TD % 50% 84%
Defensively the Bulldogs will be facing an anemic UTEP offense. UTEP has had three guys man the quarterback position and have yet to be able to find any kind of consistency. Tech has traditionally had issues in El Paso, so the Bulldogs will need to slow down the Miner run game to avoid an upset.
UTEP Offense Tech Defense (Allowed)
PPG 11.3 29.3
Rush YPG 88.2 185.5
Pass YPG 126.6 225.2
Total YPG 214.8 410.7
Yards Per Play 3.8 5.9
Turnovers (Forced) 15 17
Third Down % 28% 44%
Touchdowns 15 37
Red-Zone TD % 69% 58%
The ‘Dogs struggled mightily on special teams a week ago against FAU. Giving up a kick return touchdown and having two punts fail to cover 20 total yards will cause concern for any coach. Tech head coach Skip Holtz and his staff will look to get things cleaned up this week.
UTEP ST Tech ST
PAT % 93% 91%
Field Goal % 50% 74%
Kick Return Average 20.9 20.6
Punt Return Average 4.2 9.4
Punt Average 43.5 37.3
Blocked Punts 0 0
Return Touchdowns 0 1
Tech holds an advantage in nearly every category in every phase of the game. The Bulldogs should win this game going away. With the struggles that Tech has had offensively mixed in with the difficulty of a long road trip I expect this game to be close for a majority of the day before Tech will prevail 27-10.
