As mediocre as we are currently, and being ranked third in a conference that is exceptionally weak this year must certainly be considered mediocre at best, according to Sagarin we are still ranked 19th in the nation among non-Power 5 schools. If we were currently ranked only 50th among all schools (P5, G5, and 1AA), a ranking we have achieved or bettered on multiple past occasions, we would leap to 8th among all non-P5 schools.

Viewed another way, just a slightly above average Tech team can expect to be in the Top 10 nationally among non-P5 schools, and the hurdle is low to annually being ranked among the Top 5 non-P5's.

Improved salaries for assistant coaches could secure that annual Top 5 ranking, and with only approximately $20mm in additional facility improvements (beyond the current press box/suites construction) we would have the opportunity to begin to challenge Boise and Houston for the top ranking among non-P5 programs. As far away as that scenario currently appears, its attainment is actually within reach.
