La Tech: 1-0 (0-0) The Dogs are coming off a great home opener vs Southern defeating the Jags 62-15 and now head to Bowling Green,KY to take on WKU in the C-USA Opener.
Western Kentucky: 1-0 (0-0) The Hilltoppers after coming off an emotional win vs SEC Team Vanderbilt in Nashville 14-12. Now they get ready and try to get revenge after a loss to the Bulldogs last year 59-10.
Keys to the Game:
LT: (1) The Bulldogs have to establish the running game early. WKU only allowed 168 yards on 41 carries which averages to 4.1 per carry. (2) Tech has to be successful on 3rd Downs. Against the Jaguars Tech was 3/10 (30%) on 3rd Down Conversions and WKU's 3rd Down defense allowed 1st Downs 39% of the time. (3) Tech's defense needs to keep QB Brandon Doughty and the passing game grounded. Last year Tech stuffed their passing game and forced 4 INT's which led to more opportunities for the offense to score more points if they can keep the pressure on Doughty and keep the receptions and yards down Bulldogs will have a great chance to win.
WKU: (1) Force Tech to turnover the ball. The Hilltopper defense looks some improved they forced Vanderbilt to turn the ball over 3 times in the win which did help their offense and if their defense can continue to do that it will be a long night for Tech. (2) The passing game has to show up and help the run game. Their passing game has to show up especially after last year they were a total 16/39 for 145 yds 1TD and 4INT's. (3) Score early and often with it being at home and it's the 1st C-USA game and a nationally televised game if they can go in start out and jump on Tech early I feel the momentum with those scores and that crowd will be hard to overcome.
Players to Watch:
LT: WR Trent Taylor I really believe he'll play big for the offense in the slot to help set up the other WR's and also last year vs WKU he had 9 catches for 113yds and 3TD's.
WKU: I'm going with the Senior TE Tyler Higbee. The 6'6" 250lb Higbee vs Vanderbilt had 4 catches for 102 yds and a TD and to me I see him as a huge safety net for Doughty and if Tech's defense has no answer for him he could be trouble.
Prediction:
This to me could be a preview of the C-USA Championship game. The top 2 offenses in the conference go head to head and to me it'll come down to who will have the better defense and to me it'll be close but Tech's defense will do just enough to help edge the Hilltoppers in a close one.
Final LT: 27 WKU: 21
