Alright, let's take a look at the defensive performance against the Golden Eagles. Not a popular take, but it wasn't as bad as many think.
Let's look at some game statistics:
Points -- 30 (not good, but one drive was 20 yards after the INT)
Total Yards -- 393 (allowed 381 per game in 2019)
Third Down -- 7/12 (must improve)
Turnovers -- 1 (forced 2 per game in 2019)
Big Plays -- 74 yard TD to Jones, 27 yard run by Gore, 24 yard pass to Brownlee on last play of game, 24 yard pass to Jones, 21 yard run by Ragsdale, 20 yard TD to Jones
The big plays are my only concern at this point. That's it. This defense is going to be just FINNEEEEE.
Those 6 plays went for 190 yards, 2 TDs.
The other 60 plays in the game went for a total of 203 yards. That's 3.4 yards per play!!! That would have ranked #1 in America by almost a yard in 2019!!!
What did we expect coming into this game? Tech had not practiced in 2-3 weeks, were starting at least 3 guys who had never played a 1 snap!!
I'm sorry, but I'm just not sure I'm as concerned about the defense as many appear to be. Sure, Tim Jones went out, but guess what? Players get hurt. He's also going to play in the NFL and I remember Trent Taylor and Carlos Henderson abusing opposing defenses in their careers.
Improve on the big plays and the defense will be pretty good again in 2020.
Thoughts?
