We’ve reached the halfway point of the season now. Our record is 2-4 (1-1). How would you grade our team units?
QB: B- AK has been solid until this week for whatever reason. Hopefully he figures it out. We’ll go as he goes. Our backups are not ready.
RB: C+ Overall, I had high expectations for this unit with the transfers. I know they have to have blocking, but I have not been overly impressed with most of a supposedly deep RB stable. Williams has been most consistent.
WR: B We have some impressive players (Means, Harris, Emilus). We haven’t had a ton of drops. At times, we need more separation.
OL: D+ They’ve given up 10 sacks in 6 games. However, I’m afraid without adjustments, our opponents will put on the UTEP tape and try to repeat. Run blocking hasn’t been great, but it’s tough to block when the other team knows what play is coming.
Overall Offensive Evaluation: C+ We are less than 50% scoring a TD in the Redzone. We are 39% on 3rd down. Is it play calling or execution?
DL: B+ They have shown good execution in quite a few games this year in short yardage and goal line situations. We’ve averaged over 2 sacks per game. Hopefully the Bell Brothers will be reunited soon.
LB: C Grubbs is having a sophomore slump—lots of missed tackles. LBs have been a liability in pass coverage.
DB: C- This group has been either good or bad. We seem to have some coverage breakdowns. We allow too many third and long conversions.
Overall Defensive Evaluation: B- They’ve kept us in games and have forced an average of 2 turnovers per game.
K: B- 80% is a B-. Barnes is perfect from inside 40. He’s consistent, but not going to hit the 50 yarder to win the game like his brother or Nelson or Scobee.
P: B Barajas has done an above average job, averaging 42 yards a punt. The problem is that he’s getting too much practice with averaging nearly 5 punts a game.
Return Offense: D Outside of Smoke’s one long return, they are nothing special. In fact, Harris has made several terrible mental mistakes that have cost us.
Return Defense: C Only 6 touchbacks in 36 attempts. Contrast that to our opponents who have 25 touchbacks in 33 attempts. Still can’t figure out how every other team can put it in the end zone but us.
