Ok, maybe it is a little past midseason, but I dropped the play by plays of our games into Excel because I was curious about a couple of things.
First, I hate mid range jumpers, and the play by plays are nice enough to break shots into dunks, layups, jumpers, and 3 pointers. I honestly don't know the dividing line between layup and jumpers, but my guess is that they count low post moves and floaters near the basket as layups and at some point those moves are far enough away that they count them as jumpers. I'd have to watch some games to figure that out, and I haven't had a chance to yet. Regardless, it is telling how poorly we shoot "jumpers". In fact we are almost as good at 3 pointers as jumpers, and since they are worth 1.5x the points...I hate jumpers. I sorted this by effective Field Goal %, which is basically how efficient your shots are on a point basis by counting a three pointer as 1.5 makes. As we would expect, Pemberton leads the way, but Bracey is surprisingly least efficient (perhaps because he is the one stuck trying to make the circus shot as the shot clock expires).
The other thing I expected was that due to Powell's poor play (in my eyes), I expected him to have the worst Plus-Minus on the team. For anyone wondering, the Plus-Minus is basically how many more or less points your team has scored compared to your opponent while you are on the court. Surprisingly, Powell has the best Plus-Minus on the team, while Bracey, Muhammed, and Langston have the worst of the regulars. I don't know whether that should make me question Plus-Minus as a meaningful statistic or whether I underestimate Powell's impact on the court despite his lack of on paper production, especially in recent games. I'd be interested in thoughts around this.
If there is any other breakdown anyone is interested in that I can scrape from the box scores or play by plays, I'd be more than happy to give it a try this week.
