Former Bulldog pitcher Phil Maton has been rated as the 18th best prospect in the Padres organization by MLB Pipeline. Maton is entering his 3rd professional season with San Diego after being drafted in the 20th round in 2015. Maton has averaged an astounding 14.5 strikeouts per 9 innings over his first 84+ innings in the minor leagues. His fastball typically sits at 93-96 mph with an elite spin rate that allows him to dominate within the strike zone. If he was in the big leagues, his spin rate would rank in the top 5 with the likes of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. Maton also has a mid to upper 80s cutter that has obliterated bats in the minor leagues. Maton is expected to be in the big league bullpen by this summer. He will be the first Bulldog to be in the big leagues since Brian Myrow last appeared in 2008 for the Padres as well.

Phil was my roommate in college, so I keep close tabs on him as well as the other Bulldogs in the minor leagues and will be sure to keep you guys updated on all of them throughout the year.
