The Diamond Dogs will open their season at Pepperdine tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 4PM. The two teams will then play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1PM, and will close out the series Sunday with a 1PM first pitch.

Matt Miller is expected to start Friday afternoon, Logan Robbins game 1 Saturday, followed Tyler Follis in game 2, then Logan Bailey will start the series finale. Bailey went 12-2 at Panola College in 2017 with a 2.45 era while striking out 104 in 80.2 innings. Robbins went 12-0 at Jones County Junior College with a 2.29 era in 66.2 innings.

Pepperdine really struggled in 2017. They were 20-32 overall and 8-19 in WCC play. They are picked to finish 7th in their league in 2018.

Offensively the Waves were one of the worst teams in the country a year ago. They finished in the bottom 35 in average, on-base percentage, slugging, walks, home runs, runs, and were in the bottom five in stolen bases.

Jordan Qsar is their leading returning hitter after hitting .269 with 2 home runs and 24 rbi last year. Their lineup will be littered with freshmen and sophomores.

On the mound, Wil Jenson is expected to get the start on Friday. He’s one of the better prospects in the conference for the 2019. He finished 2017 with a 2-8 record and a 4.61 era. He also gave up 101 hits in 82 innings and only struck out 43.

Along with Jenson, they’ll start right handers Cooper Chandler & Christian Stoutland, before rounding out the series with left-hander Easton Lucas. Chandler is a freshman, Stoutland saw 10 innings in 2017, and Lucas threw 1 inning a year ago.

Kiko Garcia is their best reliever. He had a 2.25 era in 43 innings a year ago. He only struck out 25 though.

One thing about their pitching staff, they don’t have a ton of experience, and the returners have very low strikeout numbers.

Tech has a golden opportunity to start this season on a positive note this weekend. If Tech wants to make some noise in 2018, they need to take 3 this weekend. I know that seems crazy, but Pepperdine was brutal last year offensively and Tech has some experience on the mound. We’ll see how both Bailey and Robbins adapt to the D1 game. The Tech hitters will be a little behind, that’s baseball early on.
