Don't look now, but our offense is rapidly evolving. Sure, we'll continue to throw, but we won't be utilizing nearly as many WR's. It's as plain to see as my big feet. WR recruits in 2016? Nope. TE recruit? Yep. Big FB recruit (Thomas) to go with big roster FB (Holley)? Yep. Powerful OL recruits to support a ball control game? Yep. The WR's in the 2016 class are a 155 lb preferred walk-on, high character speedster (Jake Norris), and a 5'9" walk-on, tough-guy speedster from Livonia (Darius Hammond).

This is a clear departure from the tall, rangey receivers that are currently so coveted by most other teams and is another indication of how Skip is moving the offense in a different direction. Receiver height is not so important when the WR's are used more for maintaining a deep threat than being primary targets. For receiver height, look to the TE.

In a spread offense, the running game is used to keep the defense from fully concentrating on the passing game. In Skip's developing offense, it will be the opposite. The deep passing threat will be used to keep the defense from crowding the line of scrimmage to stop the run and short passing game. An advantage of Skip's approach is that we will not be in recruiting competition for the very limited number of tall, talented receivers. There is an abundance of speedy short ones.

I'm not alarmed by this. In fact, I like the direction if it's not carried too far. But nevertheless, the direction is crystal clear. It's also the reason our next QB will be that person that is best suited to run a ball control offense. Our next QB will not need to be particularly athletic or possess a strong arm (although always helpful), as much as he will need to excel at quick reads, accuracy, and timing throws of rarely more than 15 to 20 yards.
