Lately there’s a recurring topic I’m thinking about pertaining to Tech.

When we look at the success softball coach Mark Montgomery has had with basically no resources, what’s his secret?

In softball, you have more scholarship dollars to go around than baseball because of Title IX. I imagine there are less overall players playing softball than baseball (or basketball for that matter). So what gives? Is he a better talent evaluator, a snake oil salesman, or what?

When Tech excelled in WBB it was in a time no one was really investing in WBB, Title IX changed that (especially in the Power 5 conferences). Just look at how many teams in the SEC just plain dominate on the national stage in softball.

For all the Holtz detractors there’s not many who even advocate for his dismissal (you won’t find me in that camp either) but those advocating for the dismissal of every coach of a “major” sport (let’s call these MBB, WBB and BSB) at Tech has their share of detractors. Montgomery and Holtz set the standard for recruiting by Tech’s coaching staffs.
