All it took was six games for former Thibodaux High School football star Amik Robertson to become a college football sensation at Louisiana Tech University.

Robertson is already making an impact in his freshman season with the Bulldogs. He has started every game this season as a cornerback, becoming the first true freshman player to start at Louisiana Tech since Xavier Woods did it during the 2013 season.

Woods, who plays safety, is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys, which shows if Robertson continues to shine and make progress, he’ll definitely be playing on Sundays in the NFL soon.

After six games, Robertson is fourth on Louisiana Tech’s roster with 26 total tackles (21 solo, five assists). He also has two tackles for a loss, one sack, one interception, three pass breakups and a quarterback hurry.

He is coming off a team-high eight-tackle performance (all solo tackles) during a close 23-22 loss at UAB on Saturday.

As you can see, it didn’t take Robertson long to contribute to Louisiana Tech’s defense.

And the best part is that he’s just getting started.

For many of us around the Bayou Region, Robertson’s performances shouldn’t come as a shock. After years of watching him dominate area high school football fields, we all know how talented Robertson is when he gets into his zone. We also knew that he would be a star wherever he went in college. He’s just one of those players who are born with it.

Just like his idol in former LSU defensive back and current Arizona Cardinals star Tyrann Mathieu, Robertson is a natural playmaker who has the ability to take over a game, whether it is with a key tackle, interception return, pass deflection or huge return on special teams. His work ethic is contagious, and his confidence is infectious. He makes his teammates better, and he will never back down from a fight from larger competition.

Robertson’s performance as a freshman is not bad considering many major college programs overlooked him due to his size. At 5-foot-9, 172-pounds, there were college coaches who slept on Robertson during his recruitment, with many thinking that he was too short or small to play against the big boys.
