A lot is talked about how Kansas is the worst team in FBS and rightfully so. What is not known is the scholarship issues that the Jayhawks have been dealing with since the departure of Charlie Weis.
David Beaty is hopeful that Kansas will have 70 players on scholarship this season, many that began with the program as a walk-on.
When Beaty took over the program in 2015, 38 scholarship players were due to return. Only 12 of the first 56 players Weis signed were returning in 2015.
Weis tried to us JC transfers to fix the program in 2012 and 2013 signing 27 guys. Only 2 qualified out of HS, 14 never graduated and 10 never even saw the field.
Beaty's first year he had 68 on scholarship, 77 in 2016, and 72 in 2017.
Basically Kansas was facing NCAA sanctions without actually facing them.
All of this was self-inflicted. Problem is, you can't ever sign more than 25 guys in a class.
Kansas has been blueshirting players. Players have to pay for school in the summer, before going on scholarship the first day of fall classes. The trick is this: the players can't take an official visits, and the coaches can't meet with any of the players off campus.
Kansas has also been trying to persuade players to walk on for two years before being added to scholarship for the last three years. This allows the players to not count towards a 25 man signing class.
When looking at grad transfers, they try to get the guy to pay his on way for a semester so that he will not count towards a signing class.
When signing JC guys, Kansas now has to look towards guys that are qualifiers out of HS, and are looking for guys with 3 years of eligibility.
Kansas is 3-33 over Beaty's first three years. 21 of those losses have come by 20+ points. Can you blame him though?
It will be interesting to see if Jeff Long keeps Beaty around.
I don't give a rip about Kansas football, but I found this to be extremely interesting.
