Mike Collins will get the start at QB on Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM on ESPN3.
Collins is a 6'5, 217-pound grad transfer QB from New Canaan, CT.
Collins started his career at Penn in 2016, transferred to TCU in 2017, played in 11 games (4 starts) at TCU in 2018 & 2019, then transferred to Rice following the 2019 season. What a journey.
Season Stats: 30/52 (58%) for 475 yards, 8 TDs, 1 INT. He has 13 yards rushing, pocket guy.
PFF Grades: 68.3 overall, 65.6 as a passer, 64.7 as a runner
Passing Details:
At LOS or Behind: 10/13 (77%) for 93 yards, 1 TD
0-10 Yards Down Field: 10/15 (67%) for 158 yards, 3 TDs
11-20 Yards Down Field: 5/6 (83%) for 84 yards, 1 TD
20+ Yards Down Field: 5/14 (36%) for 140 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT
67% of Collins throws come between the numbers. Middle of the field will be important for Tech defensively.
No Pressure: 24/39 (62%) for 326 yards, 6 TDs, 1 INT
Under Pressure: 6/13 (46%) for 149 yards, 2 TDs
Not Blitzed: 12/25 (48%) for 136 yards, 1 INT
When Blitzed: 18/27 (67%) for 339 yards, 8 TDs
Now that is interesting, they've torn up the blitz to this point.
Collins has been sacked 4 times, had 4 drops, and 4 throw aways.
For me, slowing down Austin Trammell at WR will be the key for Tech. I don't know that I'd double him, but I would definitely roll a safety his way on most plays. It will be important to keep things contained in the box, Rice still wants to run the ball first. They've run it 43.5 times a game in the first two games.
I can't stand watching Rice play football w/ all of the I-formation stuff, 2-3 TEs, etc, but I'll get over it. Their style of play seems to really give Tech trouble, especially when they are executing. The 'Dogs need this one.
