Campus Update
Dear students, faculty, and staff,
Good Thursday morning.
Yesterday, we learned of a racist social media post from one of our students. The sentiments expressed in that post are in no way representative of Louisiana Tech University, our values, or our community members.
We do not condone or support these kinds of remarks in any way. We condemn racism. We apologize and assure our campus community that the issue was under investigation as soon as it was brought to our attention.
Dean Sam Speed and Adam Collins, our Director of Student Conduct, are working with this student within the framework of our Student Code of Conduct. Our student judicial system is designed to ensure a thorough, fair, just and impartial restorative justice process for students and organizations accused of violating the Code of Conduct or Honor Code, with a goal of educating and providing resources to achieve respect, civility and integrity for all members and stakeholders of the University community. This student’s fraternity is also working through the process with their national organization.
Yesterday’s incident on social media is not the only one our University has faced in the past few weeks.
One of our faculty members recently posted a highly controversial – and viewed by many as threatening – statement on their personal Twitter account, which also connects this faculty member to Louisiana Tech through their profile page. This statement has received negative national attention for the University and this faculty member.
Just as this student does not speak for the Tech Family, this faculty member does not speak for our University. There are responsibilities associated with the right to free speech, and threatening, harassing, and bullying speech is never appropriate. It is not representative of our values and culture at Tech.
The Tenets of Tech emphasize respect and caring for one another, and we know the members of our Tech Family respect those Tenets and make them a part of who we are each day.
The current political climate as well as the global pandemic, national social unrest, hurricanes, and economic uncertainties have caused additional stresses and complexities in everyone’s life. Our university is a place of learning, a place where the expression of different views and perspectives is welcomed in order to enhance deeper understanding and appreciation of others. I encourage you to be thoughtful, supportive and respectful of others in your comments so that we may more effectively advance our university’s important mission.
