I spent three-plus hours last night on the NCAA's transfer portal for the women's basketball programs in the Mountain West, at the request of a Fresno State alum, and then I did the same out of curiosity for the women's programs in CUSA.
Two weeks ago, there were 311 women players in the portal. This number increased to 436, followed by 500+, and now it is at 851, effective 4:00 p.m. (CST) on 04/09/21.
Of the 851 players in the portal, other info consists of:
169 - # of players in P5 schools
682 - # of players in non-P5 schools
279 - # of grad transfers
208 - # of players having committed to a new school
I reviewed the portal for several hours on Tuesday night, and I did not see a Tech player in the portal. At 11 p.m. last last night (Th), Tech has a freshman in the portal. She is Tyler Jackson, a 5'9" guard from Allen, TX, who was in her first year at Tech.
With the inclusion of the returning players from the 2020-2021 team, plus the five new players in the Class of 2021 and the transfer from Pitt, there are 14 players on the team for 2021-2022.
Loss of players from CUSA schools:
Of the 14 CUSA teams with women's basketball, thirteen programs have at least a player and up to seven in the portal, except for Western Kentucky which has none. UTSA has seven in the portal, followed by FIU and ODU with six. MTSU has two of the three players already committed to Miss State. USM has its only player from Shreveport committed to Tulane.
Addition of players into CUSA schools:
Nine CUSA programs have at least one or two players already committed from other programs. Three schools that stand out as having two commitments are Charlotte, North Texas, and UAB. Charlotte has players transferring in from Duke and Kentucky; Noth Texas with players from Fresno State and South Alabama; and UAB with players from Arkansas and Green Bay. FIU and ODU have at least one player each, both at 6'3" transferring from Minnesota and Miami, FL respectively.
Barring no other changes in Tech's roster for the upcoming season, the breakdown by classes is as follows:
SR - 3
JR - 3
S0 - 3
FR - 5
Tech will have three players at 6'3" (a junior and two freshmen). I don't recall three women on a team in several years. There are some very good guards and forwards returning, plus the acquisions of transfer guard, Green (5'7") from Pitt and two guards, Brannon (5'11") from Plano HS and Smith (5'7") from Arlington Martin HS.
Tech may very well have an interesting team in 2021-2022.
