We continue to push on today with #27 in our Top 30 returning players for Louisiana Tech in 2020. Today we take a look at RS SO Brodrick Calhoun.
27 – CB Brodrick Calhoun (RS SO) -- Calhoun signed with Louisiana Tech in the 2018 recruiting class out of Mesquite, TX. Calhoun chose the Bulldogs over offers from Memphis, Tulane, Colorado State, SMU, Utah State, and Texas State.
Calhoun was a HS teammate of Tech S Beejay Williamson, who signed in the same class.
Brodrick is an interesting player, to be quite honest, it will be very interesting to see what comes of his career. First off, let me say this, he’s extremely talented and a very hard worker. However, he’s very small at 5’10, 170 pounds.
Calhoun played in all 13 games as a RS FR, primarily on special teams. He was third on the team with 149 special teams snaps and made 4 ST tackles, also third on the team. He played 27 snaps on defense and allowed 2 completions for 8 yards.
What will his role look like in 2020? First off, the CB position is wide open. Zach Hannibal is the only returner with any kind of experience. Jemaurian Jones and Dallas Taylor-Cortez were signed from the JC ranks but both are sophomores, so it’s not like they are overly experienced either. After that, the depth chart is filled with RS FR and TR FR.
I think Calhoun has a chance to carve out a role in the nickel, especially as a sophomore. He’s smaller, got good hips, could be a solid option in that role, but he’s going to have to show he’s ready.
When I watch him, watch him work (how he goes about his business), I have always compared him to a less talented Amik. He is smaller than Amik though, so he’s going to have to prove that he can handle physicality. I’m excited to see what he can do in 2020. This inexperienced defense needs some guys to step up, especially in the secondary where all 4 starters departed due to graduation.
