Today we look at the breakout performer of 2019, RB Justin Henderson.
3 -- RB Justin Henderson (RS SR) -- Henderson signed in the summer late in the process out of Coffeyville CC prior to the 2018 season. Tony Ball found him, what a find he's been.
In 2018, Henderson struggled. Plain and simple. He played in 10 games, rushed 28 times for 113 yards. He also had 2 catches for 14 yards. Fumbles were an issue, we all know that.
What changed from 2018 to 2019? He quit telling people how good he was, and he started showing people how good he was. Guess what? He's pretty dang good.
In 2019, he rushed 188 times for 1,062 yards and 15 TDs. He also had 20 catches for 200 yards and 1 TD. Following the season, he was named 2nd Team All-CUSA. Henderson was also named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player in the I-Bowl after rushing 22 times for 95 hard-earned yards.
With the injury issues that Tech had at RB in 2018, the Bulldogs badly needed someone to step up and claim the role in 2019. Henderson did that. After only seeing 20 carries in the first three games of the season, Henderson busted out against FIU. Tucker was out due to illness, Dancy was banged up, and Henderson decided to take the position. On a night when many had the Bulldogs as an underdog, the 218-pound bowling ball put the team on his back rushing for 141 yards and 3 TDs on just 15 carries. From that point on, the RB was his.
In 2019, Henderson saw 20 or more carries in 3 games. It's just a different era, it's a two-back game these days, but he's the lead guy.
He's ok as a pass blocker. He allowed 6 pressures in 87 pass blocking snaps.
As a WR, he's ok as well. He's not a guy that's going to wow you with his ability to run routes out of the backfield, but he can catch a screen and hurdle a guy or two for some decent yardage.
As a RB, I love watching Justin Henderson play. First off, he's 5'10, 218 pounds. A bowling ball. He doesn't have overwhelming agility, he doesn't have overwhelming speed, he doesn't have overwhelming shake, but I tell ya one thing, if he gets to the second level coming downhill, I don't see too many LBs and DBs lining up to take their shot at him.
What is Justin Henderson's outlook for 2020? He's the starter at RB. I expect him to rushing for another 1,000 yards, 15-17 TDs, be a 1st Team All-CUSA selection. If Israel Tucker is healthy throughout the season, I think it really only impacts Henderson in the receiving game. Henderson is going to get his carries. With all of the weapons returning at the skill positions, Henderson is the best. Defenses will be keying on him far more in 2020 than they did in 2019.
Thoughts on Justin Henderson? Is he a late round NFL Draft Pick in 2021?
