Today we take a look at another former walk-on, a player that was crucial for the Bulldog offense in 2019.

6 -- WR Cee Jay Powell (RS SR) - Powell joined the La Tech program as a walk-on in 2016. He played his HS football at Livonia HS where he was an All-State QB. He won a 3A State Championship his junior season.

Powell has steadily progressed through the program after starting out as a walk-on. He's played in 38 career games.

2017 -- 12 GP, 106 snaps, 5 catches for 37 yards
2018 -- 13 GP, 188 snaps, 17 catches for 101 yards
2019 -- 13 GP, 338 snaps, 43 catches for 488 yards, 1 TD

He's also played 192 career snaps on special teams. He isn't the most explosive player in the world, but he's a guy that you know isn't going to turn the ball over as a punt returner.

Entering 2019, I don't think many thought Powell could be a reliable contributor when you factor in his size and that he's not all that explosive. However, he was quite good in 2019 and showed that his quickness allows him to get open with relative ease.

Powell was 3rd on the team with 62 targets. He caught 43/62 (69%) of those targets. He did have 5 drops, most on the team, which obviously isn't good.

Here is why I like Powell so much and believe he's so important to the team, 29 of his 43 catches went for first downs. He's a chain mover.

Powell is also very good in the screen game. He understands how to setup blocks and get north and south. That is something that Smoke Harris is still very much learning.

Powell is a team leader, a guy that players gravitate towards. Infectious personality that never has a bad day. He's an extremely hard worker as well.

What is Powell's outlook for 2020? He and Smoke are going to have an intense competition for that slot spot. The two combined for 91 catches, 838 yards, and 3 TDs in 2019. There's not doubt they'll combine for over 1,000 yards in 2020. I expect that we'll see Powell play about 50% of snaps once again in 2020 and will be a reliable target for Luke Anthony with his ability to get open on every play.
