Tech will travel to Troy for a 3-game series this weekend.
The Trojans were picked to finish 4th out of 6 teams in the East Division of the Sun Belt.
Troy finished 31-29 a season ago and beat Tech 2 of 3 in Ruston.
The scored 67 runs in a 4-game sweep of Northern Kentucky to open the season. Also beat Jackson State 14-5 Wednesday night to move to 5-0.
Top Draft Prospects:
OF Rigsby Mosley
RHP Levi Thomas
RHP Orlando Ortiz
OF Logan Cerny
C Caleb Bartolero
Impact Freshman:
DH Kyle Mock
Names to Watch:
RHP Levi Thomas – will be 90-93 with his fastball, good slider that tops at 82. His change-up is hit or miss, depends on the day.
RHP Cory Gill – was the Friday night guy, still working his way back from off-season shoulder surgery, had yet to see the mound as of a month ago.
RHP Orlando Ortiz – JC transfer, long and lanky, good arm that can run it up to 95 at times, will work 89-92, really raw, didn’t start pitching until late in his high school career.
RHP DJ Wilkinson – JC transfer, big guy at 6’5, 240. Has pretty good feel for pitching, tops out at 94 a season ago
LHP Max Newton – was 3-4 with a 5.16 era a season ago. Not going to overpower hitters with his velo, but he knows how to pitch
RHP Lance Johnson – closer, has pitched in 3 games already, has 9 K to 0 BB
RHP Tyson Ellis – another JC transfer, quick arm, up to 90, has been tough to hit early on, but BB have been an issue
1B William Sullivan – big kid, can generate some power, he’s a freshman, is on a tear to open the season hitting .563 in 4 games, 6 of his 9 hits are doubles so far
3B Easton Kirk – Alabama JC Player of the Year last season, really barrels the ball up well, gap power type of guy, hitting .421 early on, has 7 BB to only 2 K
OF Rigsby Mosley -- .984 OPS in 2019, hitting .522 through 5 games, has a .621 OBP
OF Logan Cerny -- .831 OPS in 2019, will chase pitches out of the zone, he’s not in the box to walk, but now that he’s a sophomore he may have matured more in terms of patience
OF Dalton Sinquefield -- .810 OPS in 2019, 6 extra base hits in 5 games so far
IF Drew Frederic -- .937 OPS in 2019, currently hitting .400 with 4 extra base hits, also 3 stolen bases in 5 games, he might be the best player in the Sun Belt
C Caleb Bartolero – not much of an offensive threat, but does have 13 RBI in the first 5 games, really good defender behind the plate
Starting Rotation Last Week:
RHP Thomas – 5 shutout innings, allowed 2 hits, struck out 14!!!
RHP Ortiz – 6 shutout innings, struck out 7, only allowed 1 hit
LHP Newton – 5 IP, 2 ER, 3 Ks on opening weekend
RHP Wilkinson – went 1 inning, allowed 5 hits and 7 runs, also walked 2, struck out 3
I’d imagine their official rotation for the weekend will come out today.
Additional Thoughts:
I assume that Tech will go with Fincher, Follis, and Whorff again this weekend, no reason not to.
Need to get Young going at the plate, but I don’t think there is a anyone worried about him.
Netterville is off to a slow start as well, but the strikeouts are down. The results will come.
Can the freshmen stay hot?
Troy is hitting .421 as a team. Can Tech’s pitching staff slow them down? Tech’s depth on the mound is sure to get a better test this weekend.
Word is that Troy’s ballpark is made for offense, should be an interesting weekend.
