Tech will travel to Lafayette this weekend to play two games against #24 UL-Lafayette and one game against Southeastern.
Why is ULL ranked? Because they are ranked every single year by some publication in the preseason. It’s always their year, yet Tech owns them on the diamond in recent years.
Game Times:
Saturday: 2pm UL-Lafayette, 6:30 pm Southeastern
Sunday: 1pm UL-Lafayette
Scouting UL-Lafayette
- Matt Deggs will be in his first season as the HC of the Cajuns after the death of Toby Robicheaux in the offseason. Deggs was 187-118 in his time as the HC at Sam Houston St. Won Southland Conference Regular Season Championships in 3 of the last 4 seasons
- Picked to win their division in the Sun Belt
- Draft Prospects: SS Hayden Cantrelle (will be a top 5 rounder), RHP Conor Angel, RHP Connor Cooke
- Impact Freshman: C Julian Brock
- D1 Baseball did not project them to make a regional in 2020
- The strength of the Cajuns will be on the mound
- Top Pitchers: RHP Carter Robinson (9-3, 1.53 ERA in 126 IP at JC last season, 6’8, lows 90s, hard slider), RHP Conor Angel (up to 97 in fall, 4-2, 3.29 ERA last season), RHP Jeff Wilson (6-1, 5.09 ERA last season), LHP Austin Perrin (4-5, 4.52 ERA), RHP Connor Cooke (3-0, 7.99 ERA last season, up to 97, really athletic kid)
- Top Hitters: SS Hayden Cantrelle (Hit .309 last season, can really run the bases), 2B Jonathan Brandon (Hit .312 last season), CF Brennan Breaux (Hit .295 last season, really good defender, slap hitter type), UT Ben Fitzgerald (Hit .303 last season, tremendous power), OF Gavin Bourgeois (Hit .311 last season, big RBI guy)
Scouting Southeastern
- Matt Riser is entering year 7 as the HC at Southeastern. He’s won 227 games in his first 6 seasons. Fourth winningest coach in Southland Conference history with a .629 winning %.
- Picked to finish 4th in the Southland
- Draft Prospects: LHP Trey Shaffer, RHP Will Warren, RHP Justin Simanek, 2B Tyler Finke, OF Nick Ray
- Impact Freshmen: OF Champ Artigues (Picked to win Freshman of the Year), DH Jacob Burke
- D1 Baseball did not project them to make a regional in 2020
- Talented on the mound but people aren’t buying into it until they see them prove themselves
- Top Pitchers: LHP Trey Shaffer (ERA over 6 last season, will be up to 92, command was solid throughout the fall), RHP Will Warren (up to 92, four pitch guy), RHP Justin Simanek (up to 94 this fall), RHP Grant Upton (was up to 90 this summer, extremely inconsistent command wise), RHP Landon Clifton (JC transfer, will be closer), RHP Ryan Keeley (only a freshman, up to 91, really good sinker)
- Top Hitters: There are so many uncertainties for the Lions offensively. They’ll rely on a trio of JC guys in Tyler Finke, Evan Keller, and Brandon Hale. Finke is a high energy guy, can really steal bases. Keller is a complete hitter, has decent pop. Hale has some athleticism, gap power. Champ Artigues transferred to Southeastern from Tech. He sat out last season. He was SELA best hitter throughout the fall, and they expect HUGE things from him in 2020. I haven’t ever seen him, but I hope we didn’t let a good one get away.
Baseball is BACK! Diamond Dogs will be challenged in a major way this weekend. Let’s see what they got.
