Spring practice starts on March 22nd. I'm going to take my best shot at what the depth chart might look like roughly 45 days from now.
Offense:
QB: Matthew Downing (TCU Transfer) or Parker McNeil (TX Tech transfer) or Landry Lyddy, Caleb Holstein, Andrew Brister
RB: Keyon Henry-Brooks, Greg Garner, Harlan Dixon, Kevin Dominique, Marquis Crobsy or Charvis Thornton
Outside WR: Tre Harris, Julien Lewis, Cyrus Allen
Outside WR: Bub Means, Kyle Maxwell
Inside WR: Smoke Harris, Tahj Magee, Solomon Lewis, CJ McWilliams, Matthew McCallister
Inside WR: Devonta Lee (LSU Transfer)
TE: Griffin Hebert, Ivan Thomas, Carson Reider, Logan Farrell
LT: Dakota White, Elijah Bowser, Brett Canis (TX Tech Transfer) or Kenneth Bannister
LG: Josh Mote, Jerren Gilbert
C: Abraham Delfin, Ray Kelly or Landon Nelson
RG: Isaac Ellis (Memphis Transfer), Carson Bruno
RT: Biron Rossell, Carson Bruno or DeMarcus Gordon, Erron Bean
Notes:
- I assumed that Luke Anthony will be limited to start.
- I think Keyon Henry-Brooks will eat it up in this offensive scheme. Cumbie will love his downhill running style.
- I'm not sure if the Snow College PWO WR Caden Leggett will be in for spring or not, but he will be an outside WR. Staff likes him, he'll be in mix.
- Thin at outside WR from a numbers perspective, obviously. I think Cyrus Allen plays as a true freshman. I've heard some good things about him early on.
- Smaller slot spot has a bunch of dudes in the room, maybe some of that works itself out throughout the spring. Solomon Lewis hopefully forces his way onto the field. He's a special talent, in my opinion.
- Lee can play outside some as well. There will be some mix and match stuff with personnel when it comes to the big slot/TE spot. I'm sure they'll get a good feel this spring as far as what certain guys do well.
- I think Dakota White is more LT than Biron Rossell is due to his athleticism. It will be White's 3rd year in the program. He made a jump late in the year in 2021, it's time to take another jump if he's going to be a staple at OT.
- Inside of OL is set, in my opinion.
- Bruno is a swing guy, he can play either spot. I think he's a two-deep guy. Like I've said, just a good football player. Won't wow you with size or athleticism, but he's going to do his job. Similar to how Russey was at C for so many years.
- Need Bowser, Gordon, Canis or Bannister to be 1-2 solid contributing pieces at OT. Can't be a massive drop-off when they are needed for 25-30 snaps.
Defense:
DE: Deshon Hall, Nelson Mbanasor (TX Tech Transfer), Joe Mason
DT: Keivie Rose, DJ Jackson
DT: Levi Bell (injury?), Tristan Allen or Rasheed Lyles
DE: Mykol Clark, Ben Bell, Kershawn Fisher, J'Dan Burnett
ILB: Tyler Grubbs, Allen Walker
ILB: Maki Carabin, Hugh Davis (Boston College Transfer)
OLB: Joren Dickey, Taz Marshall or Khiry Morrison
CB: Cedric Woods or Willie Roberts (SFA Transfer)
CB: Myles Brooks (SFA Transfer), Brodrick Calhoun (nickel)
S: Beejay Williamson, Christian Archangel, Marquallius Turner
S: Jaiden Cole, Myles Mason, Jamison Kelly
Notes:
- The OLB role will be interesting. Power shows a lot of 4-man fronts, but he'll drop an end and blitz an ILB a bunch. Both Hall & Clark have the ability to drop into coverage.
- Power plays a lot of 3-safety/nickel looks. That's college football in this era. So that means that Joren Dickey won't necessarily play a bunch of snaps, but it could create more opportunities for Mason to be on the field regarding this depth chart. Maybe a guy like Cedric Woods plays some nickel or Calhoun earns more times.
- The depth on the DL is really good. A lot of good pieces. Similar to last season, need a difference making pass rusher. Maybe Power can create some extra heat with some different scheme stuff.
- I didn't include the P5 Transfers at DE/OLB and S that have not been mentioned yet. They'll be in two-deep. The S could be the perfect 3rd safety/nickel.
Special Teams:
PK: Jacob Barnes
Kickoff: Austin McCready or Caleb Phillips
P: Austin McCready or Caleb Phillips or Arlind Bengu
PR: Smoke Harris
KR: Solomon Lewis or Matthew McCallister or Cyrus Allen or Harlan Dixon or Marquis Crosby
Notes:
- Kickoff & punter needs to get figured out.
Thoughts? If I missed anyone, please let me know.
