Here is a brief rundown on what to expect from Hawaii tomorrow night:
Offensively:
They don’t play a bunch of different guys. In their last game against San Diego State, eight players played all 74 snaps, and 10 players played at least 73 of 74 snaps.
They don’t scheme a whole bunch of stuff, they lineup and do what they do.
In their last game they rotated at RB between Miles Reed and Freddie Holly III. Reed saw a majority of the snaps. Furuta didn’t see any time against SDSU, but he and Holly III have split the work pretty even throughout the year. Reed has only seen 90 snaps all season.
They were in a 4 WR set for 73 of 74 snaps.
From left to right in their last game they went: LT Ilm Manning, LG J.R. Hensley, C Kohl Levao, RG Solo Vaipulu, and RT Joey Nu’uanu-Kuhi’iki
Nu’uanu-Kuhi’iki has an overall PFF grade of 59.4. If someone returns on the OL, it will be Tuulima and he’ll play C. Levao will go back out to tackle.
Sacks Allowed: Manning-7 (16 pressures), Levao-5 (24 pressures), Vaipulu-3 (17 pressures), Nu-uanu-Kuhi’iki-1 (5 pressures, recently inserted into lineup), & Hensely-1 (5 pressures)
Defensively:
They will play a bunch of different guys on this side of the ball. Remember that their top defender, Tavai, is out with a shoulder injury.
Their top sack man, Padello, looks to be a pass rush specialist. He plays only about 50% of the snaps and is really undersized at 215 pounds. He does have 43 pressures, 27 hurries, and 7.5 sacks.
As a team, they have 26 sacks and 165 pressures.
They play 5 DBs on the field a lot. Not one defensive back on their team has more than one INT, they only have three on the year in total. Not one player on their team has more than 6 pass break ups. There is going to be an opportunity to make some big plays in the passing game.
The top two safeties, Hicks and Okeke, have been torched in coverage allowing a 71% completion percentage.
They give up huge amounts of yards after the catch. They’ve missed 126 tackles. For comparison, Tech has missed 96 tackles.
Their top two LBs in this one, Pavihi and Matautia, have been torched in coverage this year allowing 80% of throws that come their way to be completed.
With 3 or 4 weeks to prepare, it’ll be interesting to see what Blake Baker has cooked up defensively. Offensively, Skip’s had ample time to prepare and Hawaii isn’t very good on defense. Tech SHOULD be able to score.
