Tech and WKU will square off at Warhawk Field this weekend. It’s supposed to rain much of the weekend, so it will be interesting to see how many games they can get in. ULM’s field does not have turf.

WKU has been the surprise of the league, as they are alone in third place in the standings after being picked towards the bottom in the preseason.

Don’t get it twisted though, it’s a minor miracle that they are this high in the standings. Their numbers aren’t anything impressive.

Offensively, Jake Sanford is the name to know. He’s having one of the best year’s in the NCAA. Sanford is leading Western Kentucky with a .420 batting average to go along with 20 home runs and 62 RBI. In fact, Sanford leads Conference USA in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, RBI, home runs, and total bases.

Outside of Sanford, they only have 20 other home runs from the rest of the team. No other player has more than 31 RBI. They have only stolen 26 bases all year. They also strike out a ton.

Jack Wilson is the only other hitter hitting over .300 with a .325 average. He does have 14 doubles as well.

On the mound, WKU is plain bad. They have a 6.82 team ERA. They walk nearly 7 guys per game and have allowed 59 home runs. Tech is going to have a chance to do some damage.

Friday: RHP Reece Calvert (1-2, 4.61 ERA, 41 IP, 47 hits allowed, 15 BB, and 30 K) -- he’ll be upper 80s, touching 90-91, with a sharp slider, Ohio State transfer

Saturday: LHP Troy Newell (3-3, 6.66 ERA, 50 IP, 60 hits allowed, 33 BB, and 52 K) – he’ll be 89-91, with a good change and 12-6 curveball, command can be an issue at times

Sunday: RHP Joe Filosa (1-0, 5.14 ERA, 35 IP, 39 hits allowed, 21 BB, and 28 K) – he’ll run it up to 93, slider in the low 80s that he has trouble commanding, has made 4 starts this year

WKU is rolling, they swept Rice at home last weekend and took 2 of 3 from UTSA the week prior. That’s a big reason they have shot up the standings.

Tech can’t afford to lose a game to these guys, yes I said a game. They aren’t very good outside of Sanford. We can’t get cute and mess around with him, make the other guys beat us and we’ll be fine. We are going to score runs.

I’ll update game times in this thread throughout the weekend, I’m sure they’ll change.
