I wanted to take a look at the football schedule for 2023.

Non-Conference:

9/2 - @ SMU (7-5 in 2022 + bowl game, will have new starting QB)
9/9 - vs Northwestern State (4-7 in 2022)
9/16 - vs North Texas (7-6 in 2022 + bowl game, will have new HC & new starting QB)
9/23 - @ Nebraska (3-9 in 2022, will have new HC)

Conference:

vs/@ Middle Tennessee (7-5 in 2022 + bowl game, will have new starting QB)
vs/@ Western Kentucky (8-5 in 2022 + bowl game, Reed will return at QB)
vs/@ FIU (4-8 in 2022)
vs/@ New Mexico State (6-6 in 2022 + bowl game)
vs/@ UTEP (5-7 in 2022)
vs/@ Liberty (8-4 in 2022 + bowl game, will have new HC)
vs/@ Jacksonville State (9-2 in 2022, Rich Rod back for year 2)
vs/@ Sam Houston State (5-4 in 2022, numerous starters redshirted in 2022 so they could play FBS football in 2023, 2021 FCS National Champions)

A Few Notes:

- On paper, this is the weakest non-conference schedule Tech has played in a LONG TIME. The 2012 one is one that was probably the most similar with the bad P5 teams that were on it.

- Tech will face two opponents coming up from the FCS ranks.

- Tech will face three opponents that will be breaking in new head coaches.

- Tech will face six opponents in 2023 that played in a bowl game in 2022. Tech also played six opponents in 2022 that played in a bowl game in 2021.

Congratulations to the Oak Grove Tigers and Ouachita Christian Eagles (Monroe) on winning state titles at the Caesars Superdome tonight.

Oak Grove was led by Jackson Bradley (SO/QB/6'3"/200), one of the top quarterbacks in the Class of 2025 in the state. His dad is Josh Bradley, former Tech football player. Josh is an Assistant Coach on the football team and the Head Coach on the basketball team at OGHS.

Let's not forget to acknowledge another Tech football player, Richie Casey, who is the Head Coach for the Homer Pelicans. Last year, Casey's team won the 1-A state title. Congrats Coach Casey in getting your team back to the title game this season!

Division IV (Select):

#1 Vermilion Catholic - 14

- Sam Houston moved to 4-0 with wins at Oklahoma and Utah

- Georgetown is about to lose to Northwestern and Loyola Marymount in back to back games to fall to 1-2. You gotta think Ewing is toast. How much different do things go for him if Junior wound up in DC? (Thanks Junior!)

LHP Bryson Bales is in the transfer portal. Bales made 3 appearances in 3 years at Tech.

I've also heard that OF Jack Parks, INF Connor Mulhern, and possibly OF Jack Cue are not expected to return in 2023.

Observations:
- A significant amount of deadwood has been trimmed off the roster. While down to 53, the contribution per player ratio has risen significantly. But lacking a lot of talent.
- Obvious areas of need are QB, RB, LB and S.

Lots of work to do. Got 30 scholarships to do it with - time for this staff to go to work.

This has to be the goal of the staff. What total scares me is I don’t know that we have great recruiters. So we will be recruiting against schools that are paying players and we can’t. A great recruiter can win over a kid or 2 without NIL, however an average recruiter doesn’t stand a chance. Ouch.
