Let’s take a look at both Jack Abraham and Tate Whatley.
It will be interesting to see who starts. Hopson on Abraham today, “I’m hoping he’s ready to roll. I keep saying that every week and he is getting better. He did just about everything with us. They’re telling me he’s ready, so we’re going to get him out there today and see how he’s doing.”
Let’s look at Abraham first:
He has a 65.2 PFF grade. He has a 68.8 grade in the passing game.
For the year, he’s completed 186/258 (72%) for 2,056 yards, 13 TDs, and 10 INTs. He’s been sacked 18 times.
Completion % at the four levels:
At LOS or behind: 81/86 (94%) for 588 yards, 5 TDs
0-10 yards: 68/87 (78%) for 664 yards, 1 TD, and 3 INTs
11-20 yards: 30/51 (59%) for 538 yards, 5 TDs, and 3 INTs
20+ yards: 7/26 (27%) for 266 yards, 2 TDs, and 4 INTs
Pressure vs No Pressure:
No Pressure: 166/219 (76%) for 1,873 yards, 10 TDs, and 8 INTs
When Pressured: 20/39 (51%) for 183 yards, 3 TDs, and 2 INTs
Shifting the focus to Tate Whatley, Hopson said about the young freshman, “He’s tough as nails. Tate’s a tough guy, he really is. He’s got a lot of grit and to be as young as he is with the things he does, he’s going to be a special football player in time. I love him to death and I love his spirit. That tough spirit is Southern Miss spirit. You could tell Tate was a competitor and tough guy when we recruited him.”
Whatley has a 50.2 PFF grade. He has a 45.3 grade in the passing game.
For the year, he’s completed 39/74 (53%) for 386 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 INT. He has been sacked 8 times.
Completion % at the four levels:
At LOS or behind: 22/24 (92%) for 196 yards, 1 TD
0-10 yards: 10/14 (71%) for 70 yards
11-20 yards: 5/13 (38%) for 54 yards, 1 TD
20+ yards: 2/11 (18%) for 66 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT
Pressure vs No Pressure:
No Pressure: 30/46 (65%) for 288 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT
When Pressured: 9/28 (32%) for 98 yards, 2TDs
It’s pretty obvious, Southern Miss likes to dink and dunk, regardless of who is at QB. Tech will have to press the LOS and get pressure. Hopson did not name a QB for this weekend.
