Tech will return home to square-off with McNeese in a 3-game series that starts tonight.
Game Times:
Friday - 6 PM
Saturday 2 PM
Sunday 1 PM
Depending on the publication, McNeese was picked to finish either 1st or 2nd in the Southland Conference 2021.
The Cowboys will be without their HC Justin Hill this weekend after he tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this week.
After being swept by Alabama to open the season, McNeese has won 5 straight.
Pitching Probables:
Friday - LHP Jonathan Fincher (1-0, 2.00) vs LHP Will Dion (1-1, 3.21)
Saturday - RHP Ryan Jennings (1-0, 1.93) vs RHP Ty Abraham (1-0, 0.00)
Sunday - RHP Jarrett Whorff (1-1, 3.48) vs RHP Christian Vega (0-0, 2.89)
Top Draft Prospects for McNeese:
RHP Cameron Meeks - will be up to 92 with his fastball, struggled in his one outing so far.
Impact Freshman for McNeese:
OF Cooper Hext -- .333, 1 2B
Some Scouting Reports on McNeese:
- Friday night starter Will Dion is a small left-hander, but he's been really good. He struck out 19 (!!!) against Prairie View last weekend. He'll sit 87-88 with a NASTY curveball.
- Saturday starter Ty Abraham is a RS FR that will sit 89-91, really comes at hitters with his fastball.
- RHP Kevin Roliard is a Texas transfer that will anchor the bullpen. He'll be into the low 90s, brother of former Tech P/OF Kyle Roliard.
- Nate Fisbeck leads the Cowboys offensively, he's hitting .300 with 6 HBP in 8 games thus far.
- Jake Dickerson is only hitting .160 with 12Ks early on, but he's got impressive power.
- Clayton Rasbeary is off to an impressive start, hitting .548 with 8 RBI.
- Payton Harden is their best prospect in the lineup, he's hitting .323 with 3 RBI. He's got really good speed.
- McNeese only has 2 home runs as a team in 8 games, only 4 stolen bases.
Keys for Tech:
- Tech must make Dion grind on Friday night. He's going to strike guys out but driving his pitch count up will be a key to success.
- Tech's bullpen, particularly in the middle innings, must have success.
- Corona and Hasler can't allow McNeese to get its running game going. Some of this is on the pitchers as well.
I said this on radio this week, Tech needs that one momentum swinging play to happen badly. With all the preseason expectations, they are pressing. They need something to happen that allows them to exhale and just play baseball. Hopefully that happens this weekend.
Ribbon cutting ceremony is at 1:30 PM today. Fans will be in the stands tonight for the first time at the new JC Love Field.
