Tech will host Marshall in a 3-game Conference USA series this weekend. The series will be played Thursday-Saturday due to it being Easter weekend.
Game times: Thursday 6 p.m., Friday 4 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m.
Tech will trot out its normal rotation of Matt Miller (5-0, 3.35), Logan Robbins (3-2, 6.31), and Logan Bailey (4-4, 6.55).
I still think there is certainly reason for concern when it comes to Robbins and Bailey, but when you have Griffen and Leal coming into games out of the bullpen, I think it can make-up for some of their issues.
It might be an unpopular take, but I think it would be smart to leave Leal in the bullpen on the weekend and extend him some in the middle of the week. I don’t think his off-speed is near where it was before he went down, which has caused him to lose some of his effectiveness. That said, having him ready to roll early in a game at the first sign of trouble is a luxury in my opinion. I like where the staff is, I wouldn’t mess with the mojo.
Steele Netterville snapped a 2 for 27 skid with a two hit night against ULM on Tuesday night. Let’s hope that gets him going, he’s leading the team with 7 home runs.
Parker Bates snapped a 1 for 14 skid with a two hit against the Warhawks. Bates leads Tech with 39 RBI.
Since returning to the lineup against UAB two weeks ago, Hunter Wells is hitting .350 with 10 RBI.
Seth White has provided a major spark since Burroughs inserted him into the lineup. He’s hitting .333 with a .462 OBP in 27 plate appearances this season
.
Looking at the Thundering Herd, they come in at 21-15 overall and 8-7 in Conference USA play. They are currently in 6th place. They’ve won four out of five league series. They’ve taken two of three from FIU, MTSU, WKU, and Charlotte. They were swept at Southern Miss.
They are an offensive ball club. They are scoring nearly 7 runs a game while hitting .296 as a team with a .370 OBP.
C Rey Pastrana is their best offensive player. He’s hitting .271 with 5 home runs and 23 RBI. He hit 13 home runs a season ago, serious power. He can be exposed with breaking balls down and away. Only MLB prospect on the team.
OF Shane Hannon is another player to watch for. He’s been out with an injury as of late, but he’s hitting .375 with 4 home runs and 19 RBI.
IF Elvis Peralta has been a surprise. He redshirted a season ago after transferring in from a JC. He’s got a smooth left-handed stroke that has led to a .338 average with a team-leading 6 home runs and 29 RBI. He also has some good speed, with 8 stolen bases.
OF Tucker Linder is another player that I will highlight. He’s a 6’5 OF with serious pop to all fields. He hitting .333 with 5 home runs and 33 RBI.
OF Erik Rodriguez and IF Geordon Blanton are the two base stealing threats. Rodriguez has swiped 20 bases, while Blanton has swiped 11.
Pitching Probables:
LHP Josh Shapiro (5-1, 1.94 ERA, 51 IP, 36 hits allowed, 25 BB, and 47 K) – was expected to be the #3, has really come on as a senior after a so-so year last year, quick arm action guy, ball gets on hitters quick and induces a bunch of soft contact
RHP Wade Martin (0-1, 1.80 ERA, 5 IP, 3 hits allowed, 1 BB, and 4 K) – working his way back from Tommy John Surgery, has made four starts, all one or two inning stints, command guy, not great velo
TBA, but it has been RHP Zac McNeel (1-2 7.44 ERA, 32.2 IP, 40 hits allowed, 31 BB, and 30 K) –serious velo that has been up to 94 at times, wipeout breaking ball, zero command which has equaled rough numbers
Key Relievers:
RHP Michael Guerrero (1-1, 1.89 ERA, 19 IP, 10 hits allowed, 19 BB, and 27 K) – closer with 4 saves
RHP Sam Boone (1-2, 2.31 ERA, 11.2 IP, 10 hits allowed, 6 BB, and 13 K)
LHP Ryan Falls (4-1, 3.75 ERA, 36 IP, 29 hits allowed, 19 BB, and 26 K) – he’s the guy they come with behind Martin, has gotten good results, but I’ll take my chances with the Tech offense against him
RHP D’Andre Knight (3-2, 4.71 ERA, 21 IP, 21 hits allowed, 6 BB, and 17 K)
I’m not saying Marshall is bad, but this is a team Tech could sweep. Marshall has some talent, but they aren’t anywhere near a complete team. While their pitching staff has a 4.60 ERA, they aren’t good. They walk over 7 guys per game. This should give Tech ample opportunities to put together some big innings.
