RUSTON – Louisiana Tech Athletics announced its 2015 Hall of Fame Class today which includes 10-year NFL veteran running back Robert Brunet, 1998 Biletnikoff Award winner Troy Edwards, Bulldog basketball all-time leading scorer and rebounder Mike Green, 1989 Kodak All-American Nora Lewis and 1987 All-American shortstop Charlie Montoyo.
The 5-person class will be enshrined into the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame during a ceremony held Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10:30 a.m. in the Waggonner Room of the Thomas Assembly Center.
“What an incredible class of inductees,” said Tech Athletics Director Tommy McClelland. “You have some of the all-time greatest players from their respective sports in this class. We couldn’t be more proud of this group collectively and as individuals. It will be a very special day, and we hope that all of our fans can make plans to come and celebrate the careers of these five.”
Brunet lettered for the Bulldogs from 1964 through 1967 after playing only a handful of high school games for Larose-Cut Off High School. During his time at Tech, he earned four letters and earned all-conference honors in 1965 and 1967. He set the single game rushing record of 224 yards against Lamar in 1967, a record that would stand for 23 years. He played 10 years for the Washington Redskins and was inducted into the Redskins Special Teams Hall of Fame.
While playing only three seasons at Louisiana Tech, Edwards shattered the programs career, season and single game receiving records on his way to winning the 1998 Biletnikoff Awards as the nation’s top wide receiver. The two-time all-American caught 27 touchdown passes in 1998, which still stands as the NCAA Division I record. His 405-yards receiving against Nebraska in 1998 still stands as the NCAA Division I record. He was selected in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers and also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Detroit Lions.
Mike Green lettered for the Bulldog basketball team from 1970 through 1973 and is still the program’s all-time career leader in points (2,340) and rebounds (1,575). The four-time all-conference selection was selected to numerous all-American teams during his playing career, including the UPI Small College team, the AP team, the Basketball News and US Basketball Coaches Association team. He finished as the AP Player of the Year in 1972-73 when he was also voted as the Southland Conference Player of the Year. Green played three in the American Basketball Association and was named to the 1974 ABA All-Rookie team, and appeared in the 1975 ABA All-Star Game. From 1976 to 1980, Green played in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Seattle SuperSonics, San Antonio Spurs, and Kansas City Kings.
Lewis is one of the all-time greats in Lady Techster history as her No. 40 jersey hangs in the rafters of the Thomas Assembly Center. She led Tech to a mark of 123-14 from 1985 through 1989, including three Final Fours and the 1988 national championship title. She was a two-time All-American South selection, the 1989 American South Tournament MVP and was selected to the prestigious Kodak All-American team in 1989. She ended her career with 1,760 points and 1,071 rebounds, totaling 49 career double doubles.
Montoyo lettered for the Bulldog baseball team from 1985 through 1987 where he was a three-time all-conference selection and a 1987 All-American. The Bulldog shortstop won the George Kell Hitting Award in 1986 and 1987 as the top hitter in the Southland Conference. He still ranks No. 4 in career batting average (.380), No. 5 in home runs (38) and No. 7 in total bases (337) while holding the single season record for runs scored with 76 in 1987. He was drafted in the 6th round of the 1987 Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and played 10 seasons with the Brewers, Expos, Phillis and Expos organizations. He has managed at every level in the Tampa Bay Rays organization since 1996, collecting almost a dozen Manager of the Year awards. He is currently the third base coach for the Tampa Bay Rays of the MLB.
With the addition of these selections, the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame will increase to 93 members.
