I'm going to be traveling all day tomorrow, so I wanted to go ahead and give us all some insight on BYU QB Zach Wilson.
Wilson was a 3-star recruit in the 2018 recruiting cycle. He also held offers from: Boise State, California, Fresno State, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon State, Rice, Syracuse, UNLV, and Utah State.
TR FR (2018): 66%, 1,578 yards, 12 TDs, 3 INTs
SO (2019): 62%, 2,382 yards, 11 TDs, 9 INTs
JR (2020): 80%, 624 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT
Wilson had some injury issues in 2019, turned the ball over a good amount. There was a QB competition this fall, but he won the job as expected. He's 6'3, 210 pounds.
PFF Grades by Season:
2018 -- 80.5
2019 -- 76.2
2020 -- 91.6
No Pressure | 32/39 for 557 yards, 3 TDs 1 INT
Under Pressure | 4/7 for 67 yards, 1 TD
Not Blitzed | 9/11 for 194 yards, 1 TD
When Blitzed | 27/35 for 430 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT
Troy blitzed him on 27 of 29 drop backs. WOW!! Pretty obvious that Troy blitzed a ton, never got to him though as he wasn't under much pressure. BYU has a veteran OL, it will be interesting to see how Blackwell approaches it. I don't think Troy is very good, but they definitely beat a dead horse last weekend and it got them torched.
He hasn't had any defense force him to struggle at all up to this point. How good is Navy? Troy? You can decide that for yourself. That said, he's really struggled to throw the ball down the field in previous seasons. In 2019, he only completed 43% of his throws over 10 yards. That's TERRIBLE. I'm sure he's improved some, but Tech can have some success on the back end if they can mix some things up and give him the same look every play.
The back-up QB is Baylor Romney. No, his dad isn't Mitt. Romney has 95 career pass attempts, completing 65% for 874 yards, 7 TDs, 2 INTs.
Wilson and Romney are not threats with their legs.
Should be a nice challenge for Tech on Friday night. Where does he rank in comparison to Jack Abraham and Bailey Zappe? We'll find out.
