Sonny Cumbie was on 105.7 FM this morning. Here are some notes:
- Drinking water from the fire hydrant right now. Lots of recruiting, working on getting a staff together and most importantly trying to get to know this team. Current staff has really helped him so far. It's been fast and furious, but he's really trying to stay on task.
- Knew in HS that he wanted to be a coach, loved his coaches in HS. Didn't know if he wanted to a HS coach or college coach. Three weeks of substitute teaching after college let him know he didn't want to be in the classroom. Leach gave him his first crack, been able to work with a ton of great people. He loves the interactions with young people the most about coaching, loves being around them. Every day there is something new, that keeps it fresh.
- Both Leach & Patterson are the same in the belief in what they do. Leach believes what he does on offense, Patterson believes in his defensive staff in the same way. Coach Patterson dos such a great job at educating young coaches. Everything he did had a why, we have to solve problems before the happen. He always knew how to explain it as well.
- Wants a passionate DC, wants to be multiple with 3-down and 4-down. From my standpoint, that's what gives me issues, multiple looks. We'll be very aggressive. Defenses better play with emotion and passion. That's our job as coaches to give that to our players. We will assess the talent here and figure out what looks give us the best chance to be successful. I just don't want us to be predictable. One of main factors for me in taking this job was the talent that we can get in here. These guys love football in this state. They have so much pride in this school and university, it inspires me.
- I'll be at the Neville/Warren Easton game tonight.
- He's talked to 3 different guys for the DC job, but he's going to take his time in making the hire. Won't rush. Not going to put a timeline on it. Going to be patient with it, have to get it right.
- Lots of phone calls/facetimes this week for recruiting, been to a few schools. Recruiting is very important, trying to keep all of our commits on board. But my #1 priority is to get to know our current players. Recruiting isnt far behind that, next week will be big for recruiting.
- Last 72 hours, overall hospitality that my family has been given will probably be remembered the most. The people are so kind, and I understand we are still undefeated. It's the honeymoon phase, but I love how welcome they've made us feel.
