White Signs Two Guards in Early Signing Period
RUSTON - Fitting the style of play of Louisiana Tech men's basketball is of major important to head coach Michael White and on Wednesday he announced the signing of two guards in the early signing period who fit the system to a tee.
The two future Bulldogs bringing more excitement to the LA Tech program are high school point guard Derric Jean and junior college shooting guard Dominic Jackson.
With five players hailing from Florida, Jean carries on the Sunshine State connection lettering for Warren Gale at McArthur High School in the Miami area.
The 6-foot-2-inch guard is a three-star recruit per Rivals and ESPN. ESPN also lists Jean as the 24th best player in the state of Florida.
The stat-stuffing prospect earned class-8A-7A-6A second team All-Broward County while averaging 13.2 points, 3.4 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game as a junior en route to McArthur's 21-7 overall record. He led the Mustangs to a runner-up finish in the regional championship and their second straight district championship.
"Derric is a terrific point guard, easily one of the best that we evaluated this past summer," White said. "He has got another gear with the ball, has tremendous vision and is extremely competitive as a defender. He plays for one of the better teams in a big classification in Florida, which will only continue to prepare him for this level."
As a sophomore, he helped McArthur HS earn its first district title in program history, scoring 26 points in the 80-68 title game win over St. Thomas Aquinas.
The athletic guard also lettered in track and field as a high jumper, qualifying for state with a jump of 6 feet 8 inches to earn him second team All-County honors.
Jackson is a 6-foot-3, 165-pound shooting guard playing for Olney Central College in Olney, Illinois. In his first year with the Blue Knights, he helped the team to the district championship, averaging 21 points per game in the postseason.
In his most recent game, he scored a team-high 29 points while going 9-of-13 from three-point range.
"Dominic is a Louisiana kid that we are excited to be able to bring back home," White said. "He is a really good athlete with a beautiful stroke. He has got a chance to be another good defender for us, but definitely fills the need as a shooter. He plays in a really good junior college league as well."
While playing for Beau Chene High School in the Lafayette, Louisiana area, he received all-district and all-state honors his junior and senior year in Classs 4A. He led the Gators to back-to-back postseason appearances, averaging 25 points, six rebounds and five steals per game and reached 1,000 career points.
