Thanks to Germdawg for finding this article! This announcement is typical of Tech's manner of understatement of major accomplishment, but this development may eventually be recognized as the CROWN JEWEL of many, many accomplishments by Dr. Guice. It has the potential to be the catalyst for economic renewal of Northwest Louisiana. Cyber security, and the multiple offshoots of the pursuit of that goal, is already fast becoming, and will be, the major international battleground of the 21st century. With the CIC in Bossier, and the CenturyLink - IBM research center in Monroe, the sleepy little stretch of I-20 connecting the two, with LaTech in between, has the opportunity to be transformed into the next leading-edge, nationally recognized research corridor in the U.S.
Dr. Guice has nurtured a relationship with the top brass (General) at Barksdale AFB and the government research dollars that he can secure is in the many tens of millions. This is a tangible opportunity to stop the brain drain from Louisiana to Texas, and actually reverse that trend by bringing high-paying jobs of international importance to the I-20 corridor. And little ol' LaTech sits right in the smack-dab middle of the action with a Tier 1 School of Engineering! If we can all just live long enough, we'll get to see LaTech as a university of national relevance!
