BASEBALL GAME THREAD | Diamond Dogs vs Sam Houston State

Louisiana Tech will host Sam Houston State in a 3-game Conference USA series at JC Love Field this weekend.

Friday | 6 PM
Saturday | 2 PM
Sunday | 1 PM

All 3 games will be on ESPN+/SportsTalk 97.7 FM.

Louisiana Tech currently sits at #52 in RPI. Sam Houston State currently sits at #87 in RPI.

This will be a match-up of two teams that have pitched it pretty well all season longs. Sam Houston State ranks #41 in ERA, and Tech ranks #51 in ERA.

Walker Janek is a player to watch for the Bearkats. Janek, a projected first round pick in the MLB Draft in July, is hitting .381 with 12 HR & 39 RBI.

Big weekend. Let's go!!

I’m starting to feel pretty good about Louisiana Tech’s at-large chances. The Bulldogs are red-hot right now, up to 31-13 overall and are up eight spots in the RPI overnight after shutting out Sam Houston at home. In addition to an improving RPI up to 46, the Bulldogs are now 9-4 in Conference USA, which leads the league and is a game ahead of DBU.

Conference USA (2 bids)

SAFELY IN: Dallas Baptist

ON THE BUBBLE (IN): Louisiana Tech

ON THE BUBBLE (OUT): None

One change from last week: Louisiana Tech enters our field of 64, making CUSA a two-bid league.

DBU remains in rock-solid at-large shape with a No. 20 RPI, despite its mediocre 7-5 record in the league (fifth place). Louisiana Tech boosted its case immensely by winning a road series at DBU this past weekend, then winning a midweek game against Nicholls, all of which catapulted the Bulldogs 27 spots to No. 53 in the RPI since last week. That RPI, combined with an 8-4 conference record and a 30-13 overall record, is enough to get Tech into our field (indeed, the Bulldogs were one of the last teams in our field even before receiving Wednesday’s seven-spot RPI boost). But catching first-place Western Kentucky (11-4) and/or boosting that RPI into the 40s would put the Bulldogs on much firmer ground. They are trending in the right direction.

The Hilltoppers, meanwhile, are having a great year at 29-13 overall and sitting atop the standings, but they are too far back in the RPI at No. 88, and not much better in the DSR (No. 74).

FOOTBALL Spring Practice Report - 4.11.2024

I got a chance to make it out to practice this morning.

Turner, Baker, Bullock/Keyes as top QBs right now.

Keyes, Hale, Nelson, Gilbert, and Bannister with 1s on OL.

Fields, Zimos, and Blunt running with 1s at LB.

Mcelvane, Thompson, & Richard getting 1s at S.

Blake Thompson doing some good things at S.

Davenport getting top reps at RB. Crosby practicing some, nothing team wise.

Morgan with an INT of Baker. Nice play.

DL is all over the QBs.

Latulas, Solo, and Tru returning punts.

Buck getting some reps at punter.

DGT & Woods as top CBs.

Finley running as top TE.

Webb & Myles running as 2s at CB.

These JC DBs are really big kids. Physical players.

Huff, Deckard, and Brock running as 2s at LB.

2s on OL: Christman, Cole, McGill, Kennedy, Canis

I like Leota at LB, probably not a space player but he looks good.

DT definitely has more beef to it this year.

Evans, Blay, and Clark as starting DL. Lots of 3 LB & 3 S looks.

Kolbe Fields will be the best LB in the conference.

DGT with a pick six of Turner. Out route.

Ibrahim, Latulas, and Wilkerson with 2s at WR.

Burnett, Nason, and Gray with 2s on DL.

Zimos with a pick six of Turner. Was sitting in a zone.

Baker getting 80% of reps with 2s at QB.

BJ Blake with an INT of Bullock.

Dyson Fields with a nice catch.

Marlion Jackson having a nice day at WR.

Solid day of work. Have to get better protection for QBs to give them a chance. QBs accuracy was all over the place. Has to get significantly better to give WRs a chance. Kolbe Fields is a dog.

BASEBALL GAME THREAD | Diamond Dogs vs #25 Dallas Baptist

Big weekend series for LA Tech as they travel to #25 Dallas Baptist for a 3-game series.

Friday | 6:30 PM
Saturday | 2:00 PM
Sunday | 1:00 PM

All 3 games will be on ESPN+/SportsTalk 97.7 FM.

Ryan Johnson will get the start for DBU on Friday night. Johnson is considered a Top 40 draft pick and might even slide into the back end of the first round. It’s 92-96 with the heater to go along with a wipeout slider and cutter. He throws the fastball 30% of the times, so he’s very breaking bal heavy.

Want to possibly go to a regiona? Win this series. Point blank.
