FOOTBALL 1970 Football Team

This was the 4th year for Maxie Lambright and the year after Bradshaw left. Tech went 2-8, but, all the games were close just like this season. The next year they went 8-2, and won a Bowl game to finish 9-2. Kenny Lantrip was the QB both years. The next 3 years were special with a 22 game win streak with a loss to Eastern Michigan in the first game in 1973 or the winning streak could have gone to 45. The 1974 team went 10-0 in the regular season.

FOOTBALL PFF Player Grades | LA Tech vs Middle Tennessee

Takeaways:

- Smoke continues to shine in his senior season
- Cyrus performs up to his abilities + we threw him the football
- Bachmeier got corrected from earlier today, as did Turner
- Rason Williams w/ a team-high 5 QB pressures
- I don't understand how our defense can look so good at times, but they give up some huge chunk plays way too often

FOOTBALL Eight Games in Seven Weeks

That has to be a first ever in NCAA football. While most teams have played 5-6 games Tech is the only team in the country to play 8 games in 7 weeks. Our AD of "Competitive Excellence" sure didn't set this football program up for success this year. It was "next man up" every week. Now, it doesn't matter anymore- we are done.

Athletic Student Fees - It may be now or never for some state schools

I had a conversation this morning with someone who is familiar with Jim Henderson. I wanted to get his opinion on Henderson, which was positive.

He also offered this about the ULS system: The athletic departments at all of the FCS schools have been overwhelmed by skyrocketing costs on all levels.

The athletic departments at the two HBCUs along with NSU, McNeese, Nichols, and SLU are all now at a breaking point financially. He thought UNO was starting to have issues, as well.

He said that Tech, ULL, and ULM are all having problems, but it's nothing like what's going on at the FCS schools, which need million of dollars more in cash in order to cover basic costs.

I really get the sense the ULS Board in going to have to allow its member schools to impose athletics fees, without this silly student vote. Maybe as early as next school year.

I posted this before, but it's worth repeating. When Dr. Taylor was retired but still a fixture at Tech athletic events, in 1992, I asked him about the need for a student vote on the fee for Centennial Plaza. He told me that the student fee vote only started with the Vietnam War and the push to give more power to that age group. He laughed and said "the draft has been gone for over 20 years, but we still give the students that much influence."

Well now it's over 50 years. It's a stunning lack of leadership.

FOOTBALL NFL 'Dogs -- PFF Week 4

We will do this every week:

Amik Robertson (Raiders) -- 59 snaps played, 65.2 PFF grade, 2 tackles, 1 STOP, allowed 5/8 passes to be completed for 55 yards, 1 TD

L'Jarius Sneed (Chiefs) -- 59 snaps played, 50.8 PFF Grade, 3 tackles, 1 QB Pressure, allowed 4/7 passes to be completed for 33 yards (ESPN wrote an article on free-agents-to-be that will get paid big bucks in the off-season, and he was on the list. He's guarding an opponents top WR every week.)

Trent Taylor (Bears) -- 0 snaps played, 62.6 punt return grade, 1 return for 8 yards, 3 fair catches

Xavier Woods (Panthers) -- DNP (Hamstring)

Milton Williams (Eagles) -- 36 snaps played, 59.4 PFF Grade, 3 QB pressures, 1 QB hit, 2 QB Hurries, 2 tackles, 2 STOPs

Boston Scott (Eagles) -- Was active, but he didn't get any snaps

Let’s gooooo!!!!

FOOTBALL Issues & Info

Jack will be the starter for the MTSU game. Coach Cumbie appears has decided that Jack is his QB and unless Jack throws 3 ints or loses fumbles etc, Hank will not play. Cumbie has decided to float his stick with Jack Playtime Turner. The 2 Freshmen QB’s won’t play this year unless they’re needed in an emergency situation.

At the game vs WKU I was right behind the players bench and heard a lot of what was going on. If you remember Smoke sat out 2 series OR in fact he was benched for 2 series because he and Cumbie didn’t see eye 2 eye 👁️. Smoke wanted the ball like #11 Corley. He was not happy about touches and had some choice words for the staff. This is why we saw McCallister in the game a bunch. D Lautulas has been moved to 3rd string and will lose his red-shirt by playing punt defense corner on special teams 😳.

I also saw and heard Cyrus if you remember had an implosion on the sideline throwing his helmet and choice words. Several coaches and GA’s tried to calm him down. He was pissed that Jack missed him on the streak route in the endzone. He was yelling “it never hit my hands”!! He said hack has to put touch on the ball “I had the guy beat”!!!

Max will start this week 2nd Tru, 3rd JLew and 4th DeColdest.

TE will be #34, #17, #84

Slot will be Smoke, McCallister, Latulas and Solo is still a scout team hero !! Look for Cumbie to move Smoke around this week to get him touches. Like WKU did Corley.

Z will be Cyrus, Marlion, and Duru. Staff believes Marlion has starter abilities even though has little to no production. Duru has 2 TD’s and plays with fire.

RB will be Shelton, Charvis “hobbled” Thornton, Moody and Fields

On Defense nothing really changes this week. #0 will be back. #19 played well and other than that 1 big missed tackle, he came up and had double digit tackles. I’m very concerned with #2. Just don’t want to hit and takes bad angles to avoid contact. Seen it several times this season.

Look for #6 Randle to make appearance no later than Oct 24th vs New Mex St!!!!

#13 & #8 will continue to make plays.

Dline rotation will remain the same.

This is a must win game. A loss Tuesday and we are 85% not making a
Bowl Game.

I will yield any remaining time to Ben C.
