Bulldog Community Outreach Recap for February 2024
What a great month in Louisiana Tech athletics!
Baseball – the Bulldog baseball team went 8-0 to start the season, sweeping University of Northern Colorado (4) and Kent State (3) followed by a single game blowout against McNeese 13-4.
Men’s Basketball – the Dunkin dawgs finished the month 6-2. The month started with a great 40- point road victory at FIU and finished with three consecutive road wins, the finale being a hard fought 90-84 victory over third place Western Kentucky to secure at least a top two seeding in the upcoming conference tournament.
Tech finished the season 6-2 on the road in Conference this season, their best Conference winning percentage on the road since the 2012-2013 season.
Isaiah Crawford ended the month strong and was selected as CUSA Men’s Basketball Player of the week.
Lady Techsters – the Techsters ended the month 4-4 but head into March riding a three-game winning streak and tied for fourth in CUSA.
Anna Larr Roberson was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Player of the Week and became the thirteenth Lady Techster to reach 1500 points and 900 rebounds and in a career. Going into the Western Kentucky game, Anna Larr ranked 60th in the nation hitting 51.6% of her shots.
Jianna Moore was named the Freshman Player of the Week in February for the second time this season.
Brooke Stoehr picked up her 200th win.
Softball – Coach Taylor’s team started the season going 9-2 in the month of February including taking three out of four from Missouri State to close out the month.
Two different pitchers were named CUSA Pitcher of the Week in back-to-back weeks. On 2/19, Brook Melnychuk after starting the season going 2-0 and not allowing a run in 11.2 innings and on 2/26, Allie Floyd after tossing 14 shoutout innings in her two appearances, striking out 10 with no walks and only allowed 5 hits.
Bowling – Coach Matt Nantais has the Bulldog team ranked seventh nationally heading into March. During February, the Bulldog squad placed third in the Columbia 300 Saints Invite in Valley Park, MO and tenth in the Mid-Winter Invitational in Jonesboro, AR.
Patricia Rosales was named tournament MVP in the Columbia 300 Invite after leading all bowlers in the tournament. Abbie Leiendecker finished fifth and Kylee Trexler finished twelfth.
Patricia followed up the tournament MVP performance in Missouri with a fifth-place finish and was selected to the All-Tournament team in the Mid-Winter Invitational.
Track & Field – Coach Brian Johnson continued to lead the teams to strong performances at both the Tyson Invitational and the CUSA Indoor Championships.
A’reil Williams finished first in the Women’s High Jump at the Tyson Invitational. A’reil finished .01m shy of her school record that she broke in January.
Tonie-Ann Forbes was selected as CUSA Female Freshman of the Week for her performance in the 60-meter hurdles at the Tyson Invitational. The phenomenal accomplishment for Tonie-Ann in her early career is that she has four of the top eight fastest times in school history through three meets!
Golf – Only one match in February at South Alabama. The Dogs tied for seventh with Southern Miss in the fourteen team Hal Williams Collegiate event in Mobile, AL. Freshman Niilo Maki-Petaja and senior Thomas Henson led Tech finishing tied for 21st out of a field of 80 golfers.
Tennis – Coach Sargeant’s squad finished February with 3 wins (Houston, Grambling and Northwestern State) and two losses (Rice and Tarleton State) to improve to 8-4.
The win against Houston marked the first P5 win in program history.
Senior Olga Bienzobas from Spain extended her dual singles winning streak to nine and improved to 11-1 on the season.
Grad Student Alexia Romero from Argentina won her 70th career doubles match and 46th career dual doubles.
