Cole McDonald, sophomore QB for Hawaii, will get the start for Hawaii against Louisiana Tech on December 22nd.

He has had played a big role in Hawaii bouncing back from only three wins in 2017 to eight in 2018.

Let’s take a look at his season according to Pro Football Focus.

For the season, he has completed 276/468 (59%) passes for 3,792 yards, 35 TDs, and 8 INTs. McDonald has earned an 80.1 PFF Grade overall.

Here are his numbers at the four levels in the passing game:

At LOS or Behind: 39/42 (93%) for 259 yards, 1 TD, 0 INTs

0-10 Yards: 139/196 (71%) for 1,225 yards, 12 TDs, 0 INTs

11-20 Yards: 67/135 (50%) for 1,120 yards, 10 TDs, 4 INTs

20+ Yards: 31/82 (38%) for 1,188 yards, 12 TDs, 4 INTs

Tech better be ready, he’s going to take his shots down the field and it is going to result in some big plays. Get this, 2,591 of his 3,792 yards (68%) of his yards come down the center of the field. The linebackers and safeties are going to be tested to the max.

Passing Pressure Numbers:

No Pressure: 256/412 (62%) for 3,430 yards, 31 TDs, 7 INTs

Under Pressure: 20/56 (36%) for 362 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT

Not Blitzed: 212/365 (58%) for 2,870 yards, 20 TDs, 7 INTs

When Blitzed: 64/103 (62%) for 922 yards, 15 TDs, 1 INT

Scary. In total, he’s been pressured on 104 of 536 (19%) drop backs. It will be interesting to see what Blake Baker’s game plan will be. Hawaii runs a bunch of long developing routes, which has resulted in 32 sacks of McDonald. Ferguson gives Tech an advantage, but Hawaii’s OL has graded out pretty well according to PFF in pass blocking (87.4). McDonald has suffered from 29 drops this season.

McDonald’s top target, John Ursua (89 catches, 1,343 yards, 16 TDs), leads the country with 13 drops. Ursua is just ahead of Adrian Hardy who has 12. Urusa will be in the slot, it will be interesting to see if Amik follows him around all night.

37% of Hawaii’s passing yardage has come after the catch. Tech has to get them to the ground in a hurry after the catch.

If you don’t include sack yardage, McDonald has run for 565 yards and 5 TDs. Easily leads their team. He has fumbled 9 times.

Jaylon Ferguson is going to need to be a terror in this one.
